국문 초록

조선 시대, 투기는 칠거지악으로 구분되어 다양한 담론과 정치 논리를 양산하고 문학에서도 빼놓을 수 없는 주요 화소로 등장하는 등, 현실과 허구를 넘나들며 당대 문화사의 한 축을 구성한다. 당시 한글장편소설은 상층 여성의 투기에 관심을 두고 그로 인한 제반 문제를 밀도 있게 다룸으로써 투기배척 담론을 주도한다. 그간 투기 문제는 조선 시대를 지탱하던 이념과 규범, 그리고 사회구조의 연관성 아래서 주로 논의되었다. 본고에서는 이를 염두에 두되 투기가 보편적 감정으로서 한 남성을 중심으로 배우자와 상대 여성과의 관계를 전제로 하며, 당시 사회문화와 밀접한 관련이 있다는 점을 고려하여 투기 양상과 관련 의미를 총체적으로 살폈다. 조선 시대 투기는 남녀 모두에게 해당한 문제였지만, 소설에서는 여성의 전유물로 고정되고 가문 내적 질서를 파괴한 ‘악’으로 철저히 단속된다. 이는 현실에서 투기가 정치맥락과 이해관계에 따라 상정 또는 풍교문란으로 쟁점화된 것과 구별된다. 또한 투기는 서술자의 언급처럼 편협한 성품만이 아니라 사랑, 배우자 유지 전술, 남성의 이기심, 관계 중심 사회, 비교 문화 등이 복잡하게 얽혀 처첩제를 둔 조선에서 증폭된다. 기본적으로 한글장편소설은 투기배척문화를 증명하고 확산하는 서사이다. 투기배척 담론을 완성하는 과정에서 투기하는 자와 그렇지 않은 자, 모두 고통과 상처로 얼룩진다. 하지만 현부의 희생은 윤리적 주체로서 감내할 마땅한 것으로, 투부의 고통은 자초한 것으로 소묘하여 투기로 인한 여성의 아픔과 상처를 봉합한다. 그래서 투기한 여성으로부터 촉발된 행위는 부도덕한 것으로, 투기를 인내한 여성으로부터 드러난 행위는 숭고한 것으로 이름 붙이고, 각각 악덕과 미덕이라고 고쳐 부른다. 투기배척 담론은 가문의 번영과 창달의 전제 조건이 되어 한글장편소설이라는 장르적 존립 기반을 형성한다. 이에 더해 소설에서는 현실에서 맞닥뜨릴 수 있는 투기 문제를 시뮬레션하여[여성의 신분, 성품, 결혼 조건, 부부 관계 등 다양한 정황과 인물] 상층 여성의 생활방식을 제시한다. 이렇게 투기 문제가 문학으로 재현되고 투기배척 담론이 반복되는 동안 의도치 않게 수많은 투부와 투기하는 이야기가 생산된다. 이는 한글장편소설이라는 플랫폼에 담겨 규방 곳곳으로 전파되고 현실에 존재하는 투기문화와 만나 다양한 해석과 논쟁을 야기하는 등 그 존재감을 지속해서 드러내게 된다. 그 결과, 투기배척문화를 선도하고자 했던 의도와 다르게 한글장편소설은 투기하지 않음을 말함으로써 투기 문제를 공론화하고 투기가 생명력 있게 살아 꿈틀거릴 수 있는 토양을 제공한다. 이로써 조선사회에서 여성의 투기를 가장 완벽히 지우고자 했던 한글장편소설은 가장 적극적으로 투부와 관련 문화를 생산하고 유통하는 채널이 된다.

영문 초록

During the Chosen dynasty, the word Tugi(妬忌) means a combination of jealousy and envy, and as one of the seven valid causes for divorce it has pervaded various discourses and political logics even crossing from reality to fiction. In this way, jealousy and envy constitutes one aspect of the cultural history of the Chosen dynasty. At the time, the Korean full-length novels became most popular due to the interest in Tugi of upper class women. In addition, such novels, written and produced as they were, became the distribution channel of a culture of jealousy and envy. Therefore in this paper, I analyzed to the reason for and meaning behind these Korean full-length novels. In previous studies on Korean classical literature, the jealousy and envy of women has been discussed mainly in connection with ideology, norms, and the social structure in the Chosen Dynasty. However, this paper studied the background and structure of jealousy and envy by considering three things. First of all, jealousy and envy as essential problems of human in other words as universal emotions. Secondly, jealousy and envy that arises specifically in a relationship between a spouse and the other woman who is married to her husband. Thirdly, as something that is closely related to the social and cultural factors of the time. In the Chosen dynasty, these emotions were attributed to both men and women, but in Korean full-length novels, they were are treated as attributes applicable exclusively to women. In addition, the writers of the period explained the cause of jealousy and envy to human defect, but there are several reasons such emotions would have a practical purpose, such as a tactic to maintain a spouse, to gain a competitive edge (the law of survival of the fittest), as a defense against male selfishness, or as way to manage sociocultural pressures. Next, I clarified the discourse strategies of jealousy and envy and the paradoxical meaning behind them. This issue was approached by focusing on the fact that a women feeling jealousy and envy while the other does not leads to the suffering of both individuals. The writer turns the cause of jealousy and envy to the individual’s character despite the fact that Tubu(妬婦) has reasonable feelings and points out the contradictions in society. As result, the concept of jealousy and envy becomes unnecessary, unethical, evil, lowly, and unhealthy. Even the ungrateful wanderer suffers bitterness. Also, Hyunbu’s behavior as an ethical subject is in contrast to unethical behavior and the incompleteness of Tubu who afflicts a woman who marries her husband with her own feelings jealousy and envy. This makes Tubu even more jealous and worse by stimulating more of the emotion unintentionally. The writer would show that the non-enviable discourse is competed when Tubu changes into a new person through Hyunbu’s ethics. But paradoxically, in this process, Hyunbu feels more painful, and the Tubu becomes worse. Finally, this paper finds that while Korean novels crack down that women and moralize against feeling jealousy and envy, there are no stories of women living in harmony, or even without conflict with another women together with her husband. Furthermore, I responded to why Korean Classical full-length novels are over sensitive to the jealousy and envy of women and repetitively reproduce narratives related jealousy and envy. The first reason is that “anti-jealous discourse” supported the literary achievement of Korean classical full-length novels which place value on the prosperity and development of the family. The second reason is to let the reader simulate the problem of jealousy by showing various situations related to jealousy. However while the stories concerning jealousy are consistently being reproduced through Korean full-length novels and the “anti-jealous discourse” a lot of jealous emotions are also perpetuated.
