국문 초록

이 글은 일제하에 서울 종로에서 수남상회라는 포목상점을 운영한 김씨가의 사례를 통해서 1910, 20년대 서울 상인들의 자산운용 실태를 살펴본 것이다. 크게 두 가지가 주목된다. 첫째, 당시 서울 상인들은 서울에서 점포만 운영한 게아니라 각지에 농지 등 부동산을 소유하여 임대료 수입과 매매차익을 얻었고, 대부자금을 운용 하여 이자수입을 얻었으며, 유가증권을 소유하여 배당금과 매매차익을 얻고 때로는 그걸 매개로 그 회사 중역이 되어 상당액의 보수도 받았 다. 이들은 상인이자 지주, 자본가, 대금업자이 고 기업경영자인 복합적인 존재였다. 둘째, 서울 상인들은, 비록 평균적으로는 유가증권 수익률이 농지수익률보다 낮았지만, 유가증권 투자를 통해서 그 회사 중역이 될 경우 거액의 상여금을 받아 농지수익률보다 더 큰 수익률을 올릴수 있었다. 일제시기에 지주들의 유가증권 투자가 계속되고 특히 유가증권 투자를 통해서 기업의 중역이 되어 회사경영에도 직접 참여하였던 지주 겸 부르주아지들이 그 후 단순한 지주로 되돌아간 예가 흔치 않았던 데는 이런 배경이 있었던 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the Gim family, which managed the dry goods store Sunam sanghoe in the Jongno district of Seoul, as a case study of the asset management practices of Seoul merchants in the 1910s and 1920s. There are two main findings. First, Seoul merchants did not simply operate stores in Seoul but also owned various types of real estate, including farmland, from which they collected rents and made capital gains. They also earned interest on loans and purchased securities which provided dividends and capital gains. Through the securities purchases, they occasionally became key figures in companies and collected significant payouts. These people assumed multiple roles as merchants, landlords, capitalists, moneylenders, and business managers. The second finding is that the Seoul merchants earned less income on average from securities than from farmland. However, when their investment in securities allowed them to become key members of companies, then they could make more money than they could make from farmland. Landlords during the colonial period who invested in securities and rose to become direct participants in company management were landlords-cum-bourgeoisie. However, there were very few cases where these landlord-bourgeoisie divested their holdings and went back to becoming simple landlords.
