미국 북장로교 선교사 에드윈 쿤스(Edwin W. Koons)의 행적 : 신사참배 문제와 대일 심리전 참여를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 글은 서울 경신학교 교장이었던 에드윈 쿤스(Edwin W. Koons)를 살펴봄으로써 신사 참배 문제 및 그 역사적 함의를 좀 더 냉정하게 점검해보려는 일련의 작업에 기여하고자 한다. 쿤스는 신사참배와 관련하여 수용적 입장을 취했지만 일본의 침략전쟁에 가장 적극적으로 대항한 선교사였다. 이 글은 먼저 쿤스의 출신 배경과 전반적인 선교 활동을 소개한다. 특히 그가 다녔던 신학교의 신학적 경향을 중점적으로 다루어, 그가 신사참배 등의 문제에서 보인 진보적 태도의 신학적 배경을 살펴본다. 신사참배 문제와 관련한 쿤스의 입장과 행동과 관련하여 관심을 가진 대목은 그가 왜 신사참배를 수용하는 태도를 취했느냐 하는 점이다. 이 글은 경신학교 에서 물러난 이후 쿤스가 맡게 된 여러 가지 일들과 그로 인해 총독부 당국에 의해 당하게 된고통에 대해서도 다룬다. 그가 왜 다른 대부분의 선교사처럼 한국을 떠나지 않았으며, 그가 당하게 된 고통의 구체적 내용은 무엇인지 밝힌다. 그리고 마지막으로 글은 강제 송환된 이후 그가 미국 정부에 고용되어 행한 대일본 심리전 활동을 다루게 된다. 신사참배는 다양한 가치관과 이해관계가 얽힌 복잡한 문제였다. 따라서 신사참 배와 관련된 어떤 인물의 입장을 이해하기 위해 서는 그가 신사참배를 수용했는가만 따질 것이 아니라 그의 행적 전체를 살펴보아야 한다.

영문 초록

This essay aims to contribute to recent endeavors to reexamine the meaning and historical implications of the Shinto Shrine issue by examining life and works of Edwin W. Koons, principal of the Kyungshin School. Koons showed an accommodative attitude toward the Shinto Shrine rituals, but he actively participated in anti-Japanese warfare. The essay will initially introduces the background and missionary activities of Koons. Emphasis will be placed on his seminary education in order to uncover the roots of his liberal theology as demonstrated in his attitude toward the Shinto Shrine controversy and other related issues. Regarding Koons s position on the Shinto Shrine issue, the essay is mainly concerned with why he showed an accommodative attitude. The essay deals with the duties that Koons undertook after he retired from Kyungshin, and the consequent suffering under the Japanese authorities. It reveals why he decided not to join most of his colleagues and leave Korea, and examines the nature of his suffering. The essay ends with a treatment of Koons s participation in the American psychological warfare during the Pacific War. The activities of Koons will make readers reconsider the wisdom of judging Shinto rites accommodationists as apostates or pro-Japanese and anti-nationalist individuals.
