국문 초록

이 글은 조선시대의 순자 이해와 수용 양상을 고찰한 것이다. 조선왕조는 성리학을 국가 이념으로 채택하여 관학의 지위를 부여하였다. 주자학적 도통설에 따라 조선유자들은 맹자의 성선설을 신봉하고, 성악설을 주장한 순자를 ‘이 단’으로 취급하였다. 이와 같은 사상적 지형이나 분위기는 조선시대에 순자에 대한 연구나 논의를 어렵게 만든 요인이었다. 실제로 조선시대에 쓰여진 순자주석서는 전무하다. 이는 청대나 에도시대에 많은 순자 주석서가 쓰여진 사실과 비교해 보면 매우 대조적이며 사상사적으로 매우 독특한 현상이다. 성리학 일변도의 사상적 풍토와 순자주석 서의 부재로 말미암아 ‘조선시대의 순자학’은 ‘부재’하는 것으로 간주되어 왔다. 그러나 문집 이나 조선왕조실록 등의 사료들을 살펴 보면 序․跋․論․독서기․서간문․인용문 등의 형태로 순자나 순자 사상에 대한 언급들이 적지 않게 존재한다. 산재된 순자 관련 자료들을 모아 종합적으로 분석․고찰하는 작업을 통해 조선 시대 유자들의 순자 사상에 대한 이해와 비판․ 수용 양상에 실제적인 접근을 할 수 있다. 이를 통해 ‘청대의 순자학’이나 ‘에도의 순자학’에 대비되는 ‘조선시대의 순자학’의 모습이 드러날 것이다. 이 글에서는 조선시대의 순자 이해와 수용 양상의 전체적인 조망을 위해 순자와 순자사상에 대한 (1)비판과 배제, (2)긍정과 수용이라는두 양상으로 나누어 고찰을 전개한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to investigate the way the Xunzi (荀子) was read and understood in pre-modern Korea, focusing on the Chosŏn period (1392-1910). The Chosŏn Dynasty was characterized by the dominance of Sŏngnihak (性理學). By following the doctrine of the daotong (道統, the true lineage of the Way), Chosŏn thinkers advocated Mencius’ view, xingshan (性善, that human nature is good), while regarding Xunzi’s opposed view, xing’e (性惡, that human nature is bad), as heretical. This was one of the factors that made open discussion of the Xunzi in that period difficult. Moreover, not a single commentary on the Xunzi was produced throughout the Chosŏn era. Those two facts may easily lead one to believe that the study of the Xunzi was absent from the Chosŏn period. In fact, various records in literary collections and even in the authentic history of the Chosŏn period show familiarity with the Xunzi. Not only do the dates of those records span the whole Chosŏn period, but their contents are also diverse. Although it is a “fact” that Xunzi was dismissed as a “heretical” thinker in the early Chosŏn period, it is also worth noting that aspects of Xunzi’s philosophy were actively adopted by reformist thinkers of the later Chosŏn period, who were advocators of “silrak” (實學). This paper takes up the main issues in these discussions and explores the way Chosŏn scholars read the Xunzi, and which parts they evaluated positively or negatively.
