국문 초록

기독교 인문주의는 여러 가지 면에서 종교개혁에 기여했고 16세기 대부분의 사람들은 인문주의를 대표하는 에라스무스와 종교개혁을 대표하는 루터가 협력적 관계라고 생각했다. 그러나 1524년 에라스무스가 발표한『자유의지에 관하여』(De Libero Arbitrio, Diatribe seu Collatio)에 맞서 루터가 이듬해『노예의지에 관하여』(De Servo Arbitrio)를 발표하자 그들의 종교 개혁에 대한 이해 차이가 명확히 드러났다. 본 연구는 자유 의지와 관련한 에라스무스와 루터의 논쟁을 검토하여 두 신학자가 다르게 생각했던 종교 개혁에 대한 이해를 검토한다. 이를 위해 두 신학자의 서로 다른 결론을 말 하게 된 상이한 성경관과 해석의 방법론을 비교한다. 이어서 자유 의지의 가능성에 대한 인간론의 쟁점들을 통해 그들이 그렸던 인간 구원의 지향점 임 무엇이었는지 살핀다. 이와 같은 성경관과 인간론의 비교는 두 사람이 가지고 있던 기독교“종교”에 대한 서로 다른 이해와 당시 기독교 신앙의 개혁의 목적이 무엇이었는지 분명히 보여준다. 두 신학자는 당시 로마 가톨릭이 보여주고 있는 신앙의 행태에 대해 비판하고 성경을 최고의 권위로 삼고 개혁의 대안을 모색했다는 점에서 동일했다. 그리고 성경의 핵심 주제를 예수 그리스도로 생각했다는 점에서도 크게 다르지 않았다. 그러나 에라스무스는“그리스도 철학”(Philosophia Christi)의 이상을 따라 인간의 가능성에 대한 긍정을 바탕으로 공동체 전체의 조화 가운데 이루어지는 영적 변화를 추구했다. 에라스무스와 같은 기독교 인문주의자들에게 종교개혁은 선한 문서로서의 성경의 탐구와 그 도덕적 실천 프로그램의 평화스러운 도입을 통한 개인의 삶과 기독교 사회의 개선이었다. 이에 반해 루터는 그의“십자가 신학”(Theologia Crucis)이 대변하는 그리스도의 구속 사역에서 성취된 하나님의 구원의 은혜에 대한 확신과 그 확신에 근거한 종교개혁을 추구했다. 그는 성경 전체가 이 구원 진리를 명확하게 가르친다고 주장하면서 구원을 위한 어떤 가능성도 인간에게 없다고 강조했다. 루터와 같은 종교개혁자들에게 종교개혁은 성경 전체가 명확히 증거하는 구원의 진리를 재확인함으로써 이에 따라 신자들의 삶과 기독교회 전체가 회복되는 근본적인 회복이었다.

영문 초록

In sixteenth century, Christian humanism contributed the protestant reformation in many ways. Many contemporary people regarded Erasmus and Luther shared the same vision for the religious reformation. However Erasmus’ De Libero Arbitrio (1524) and Luther’s counter publication of De Servo Arbitrio in the next year made it clear that two theologians held different views. This study analyzes the debate on the free will between Erasmus and Luther in order to manifest the different ideas of the religious reformation between Christian humanism and the protestant reformation. In the first place, this study compares the different understandings of Scripture and hermeneutics from which Erasmus and Luther proposed the different ideas of the reformation. Their different anthropological ideas for God’s grace of salvation will be examined in the following chapter. These comparisons of the hermeneutic and the anthropological ideas of Erasmus and Luther show their different ideas of the Christian “religion” and the reformation of the sixteenth-century Christianity. Both Erasmus and Luther took the same position in criticizing the Roman Catholic religion and pursuing the reformation of the Christian religion under the supreme authority of Scripture. They also agreed that the foremost essential theme of the bible was Jesus Christ. Yet Erasmus, with the vision of “Philosophia Christi”, affirmed the capability of human efforts in order to realize the spiritual enhancement in the harmony of the ecclesiastical authority. Erasmus and other renaissance Christian humanists considered the religious reformation as the improvement of the spiritual life and the Christian society by meditating the ethical teachings of Scripture and introducing the practical program for moral progress in a peaceful manner. On the contrary, Luther understood the religious reformation from the soteriological perspective that emphasized the conviction of God’s grace for salvation in Christ’s redemptive works. He argued that the whole Scripture, teaching this truth, denied any human ability for their salvation. For Luther and other protestant reformers, therefore, the religious reformation was the fundamental recovery of the Christian life and the religious community by reaffirming the biblical truth of salvation declared in Scripture.
