현대중공업의 초창기 조선기술 도입과 정착과정 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 현대중공업주식회사의 설립직후 대형유조선(VLCC) 건조를 위한 해외기술 도입과 도입한 기술이 생산현장에서의 흡수·정착되어 가는 과정을 가와사키중공업(川崎重工業) 내부자료와 관계자 인터뷰 등을 이용하여 분석한 것이다. 현대중공업의 기술 도입은 여러 계통의 다국적 기술을 조합하는 형태로 이루어졌다. 이런 형태의 기술도입이 이루어진 이유는 최초 도입한 영국 스코트 리스고 조선소의 기술적 한계에서 비롯되었다. 즉 블록건조기술의 결여, 숙련노동을 전제로 한 설계도면의 구성이 덴마크 오덴세 조선소로부터의 블록건조기술의 도입, 그리고 일본 가와사키중공업으로부터의 생산설계 기술의 도입으로 보완되었다. 이로 인해 울산조선소 생산현장은 다국적 기술 간의 갈등과 대립의 경연장이 되었고, 이 현상은 현대중공업으로 하여금 이들 기술의 장점만을 조합하도록 유도하는 역할을 했다. 아울러 가와사키중공업의 영향력 확대에 대한 견제와 ‘부메랑 효과’를 우려한 가와사키의 핵심기술 이전 기피는 현대중공업의 다국적 기술 조합 방침을 보다 확고하게 하였다. 그리고 1973년 가을에 홍콩의 2개 해운회사에서 수주한 4척의 유조선을 1976년까지 건조하면서 3개국 조선기술을 적절히 조합한 ‘현대중 공업식 유조선 건조기술’이 정착되었다. 본 연구는 경제개발기 선진기술 습득의 프로세스를 해명하여 한국 산업기술형성의 초기 역사적 과정을 명확히 하는데 공헌할 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the process of the foreign technology introduction for building VLCC (Very Large Crude oil Carrier), the absorption and establishment of the introduced technology at the point of production in the immediate aftermath of the foundation of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HHI) by using the internal information of Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and the interviews with the related people. The technology introduction of HII has been made in the form of integrating the various multi-national technologies. This foregoing technology introduction has been made due to the technical limitations of Scott Lithgow shipyard, a first introduction source. That is to say, the composition of the design drawing on the assumption of the lack of block building technology and skilled labor has been supplemented by the introduction of the block building technology from Denmark’s Odense Steel Shipyard and that of the production design technology from Japan’s KHI. Due to this, the production site in the Ulsan Shipyard has turned into the contested arena of conflict between multi-national technologies. This helped HHI combine the advantages of their technologies. In addition, the check by KHI against the growth of the influence of HHI and the avoidance of the core technology transfer by KHI that concerned a boomerang effect made the technology integration policy of HHI more firm. Also, the ‘building technology of VLCC in HHI style,’ which properly integrates the shipbuilding technologies of the three countries, was established in the process of building the four oil tankers received from the two shipping companies in Hong Kong from the spring of 1973 to 1976. This study is expected to help find out the process of the advanced technology acquisition in the period of economic growth and the early historical process of the formation of Korean industrial technology.
