과학영재, 나는 왜 의대에 진학하였나?

국문 초록

막대한 국가예산을 투입하여 양성한 과학영재들이 지난 8년간 영재학교 졸업생의 8.0%, 과학고 졸업생의 2.5%가 이공계 대신 의학계열로 진학하였다. 특정 영재학교의 경우 20%가 넘는 학생들이 의대로 진학하여 국정감사를 비롯하여 비판적인 사회 여론이 지속적으로 형성되어 왔으며, 급기야 교육부는 2017학년도부터 의학계열 진학시 불이익을 주도록 방침을 정했다. 과학영재들이 의학계열로 진학하는 것뿐만 아니라, 이공계열에서 의대로 편입(또는 졸업 후 의대 재입학)하거나 의학전문대학원을 선택하는 경우를 드물지 않게 볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 과학영재들은 왜 의학계열로 진학하는 것일까? 단순히 보다 안정된 직장을 구하기 위해서인가? 이 물음에 대한 단서를 찾기 위해 본 연구에서는 국제과학올림피아드에서 수상하였고, 과학영재학교를 거쳐 현재 서울 소재 의과대학 본과에 재학 중인 여학생의 사례를 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 의과대학을 진학한 계기, 의대 진학에 대한 주변의 반응, 의과대학에서의 생활, 그리고 과학영재로서 의대 진학에 대한 본질적 물음의 네 가지 측면에서 그 해답을 구하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 영재학교가 자신들이 내세운 인재상에도 불구하고 실제로는 창의영재 보다는 학업영재들을 주로 선발하고 있으며, 교육과정 운영과 평가방식 또한 학업영재들에게 유리하게 적용됨으로써 결국 이들을 의과대학으로 이끄는 통로가 되고 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 이공계로 진학했던 과학영재들이 이공계 처우 문제, 비민주적인 이공계 연구실 분위기 등으로 다시 의학계열로 유턴하는 사례도 많다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구결과는 영재학교들이 영재들에게 의과 대학 진학에 대한 불이익을 주기 이전에 영재학교가 과연 그 취지에 적합한 학생들을 적절하게 선발하고 또한 그 인재상에 걸맞도록 학생들을 교육하고 있는가에 대한 검토와 반성이 필요함을 시사하고 있다.

영문 초록

A tremendous amount of national budget are spent on scientifically gifted students every year, but 8.0% of gifted school graduates chose medical major over natural sciences or engineering major over the last 8 years. In a science gifted school, over 20% of its students chose to enter medical schools, which lead to government inspection and consistent negative public opinion. In 2017, Ministry of Education came to impose a rule that inflict several penalties on students who chose medical schools. In fact it is not hard to find out scientifically gifted students around us who enter medical schools, transfer to medical schools, or re-enter medical schools or medical graduate schools. Then what’s the reason behind their derailment? Is it just for more job security? To answer this question we interviewed a student who was awarded in the International Science Olympiad, graduated a school for the scientifically gifted and is currently enrolling a medical school in Seoul. We sought to find out the answer by finding out what made her want to go to medical school, how her friends and relatives reacted to her decision, what the life in the medical school is like, and finally why, as a scientifically gifted student, she wanted a life as a doctor. The results are as follows: contrary to the schools’ claim that they are searching for creatively gifted students, their identification process seems to favor the schoolhouse gifted. And curriculum and evaluation system at school is optimized for the schoolhouse gifted. Also, it was found that many gifted students who chose natural science or engineering major transferred to medical school because of poor treatment and undemocratic atmosphere of their department. This research questions whether it is right to force disadvantages on students who enter medical schools before carefully examining whether science high schools and gifted schools are selecting and educating students in alignment with the purpose of their existence.
