국문 초록

『스웨따스와따라 우파니샤드』는 『야주르베다』(Yajurveda) 가운데 ‘자고새의 학파’인 따이띠리야(Taittiriya)학파 계통에 속하는 우파니샤드이다. 스웨따스와따라는 이 우파니샤드를 전한 선인(仙人)의 이름이다. 스웨따스와따라는 의미상으로는 ‘하얀’‘보다 좋은 말(馬)(asvatara)을 뜻한다. 흰색은 순수청정을 나타내며, 말(馬)은 마음을 비롯한 지각기관과 활동기관을 상징한다. 따라서 스웨따스와따라는 마음을 비롯한 모든 기관들이 아주 청정무구한 사람을 의미한다. 샹까라는 이 우파니샤드를 ‘스웨따스와따라들의 만뜨라 우파니샤드 라고 말한다. 스웨따스와따라가 아니라 스웨따스웨따라들이라고 복수를 사용한 것은 아마도 존칭을 위한 복수, 혹은 스웨따스와따라의 가문 혹은 제자들 사이에 전래되는 만뜨라를 모은 우파니샤드를 뜻하기 위함이다. 요가철학과 쌍캬철학에 관련된 중요한 내용을 담고 있다.

영문 초록

Svetasvatara Upanisad is the Upaniṣad that belongs to Taittiriiya School(Patridge School) in 『 Yajurveda 』. Svetasvatara is a name of the saint who preaches this Upanisad. Svetasvatarameans white(Sveta) , better horse (aavatara). The white(Śveta) symbolizes pure and clean, and horse(aśva) stands for the organs of perception including mind and action. Therefore, Śvetāśvatara means the person whose organs including mind are very pure and immaculate. Samkara says that this Upaniṣad is the mantra Upaniṣad of Śvetāśvataras (śvetāśvatarāṇāṁ mantropaniṣat). He uses a term not Śvetāśvatara , but Śvetasvataras in plural. Because this appellation is for the respect as well as meant that this Upaniṣad is the collection of mantras used and handed down among Śvetāśvatara families or his disciplines. This Upanisad is very important for studying Yoga and Samkhya-Philosophy. I used the recension published by Vaidika Samsodhana Maṇḍala in Poona, India in 1958 as the basic text for translation. For the secondary text for translation, I made use of Śaṁkara s sanskrit annotation. I was helped a lot with Hindī translation published by Gītāpress for analysing the meaning of the Upaniṣad and Śaṁkara s sanskrit annotation. Also, I consult to the Hindī translation of Satyavrata Siddhāntālaṃkāra, the English translations of F. Max Müllar and S. Radhakrishnan for the clear understanding.
