영문 초록

The issue of medical enhancement has received growing attention in recent years, predominantly due to developments in the field of biomedicine and its technological application. But the idea of human optimization and self-perfectioning is not new. Human beings have always been interested in fashioning or bettering themselves, and have always intervened in their own reproduction. The practical measures and theoretical concepts involved in enhancing human beings have, however, transformed considerably over time. The current transformation of modern medicine produces an increasing number of preference-oriented services. This change affects the identity of medicine in such a way that the limits of its ability to change come into focus. Using anti-aging as an example the article investigates a number of questions which result from the trend towards preference-oriented medical services. The article gives an overview of the topic drawing on selected authors and examplary events relevant to the discussion. It presents the definition and aims of anti-aging services in relation to traditional medical goals and attempts their ethical evaluation, The author suggests to give each life phase, including old age, its inherent due. He concludes that medicine should not serve to promote only a physically powerful and attractive age but also a healthy attitude to aging.
