전통도시 읍치(邑治)를 통해 본 지역역사지리의 구성

국문 초록

인간의 구체적 삶의 궤적이 녹아 있는 공간에는 역사상 전개되어 온 다양한 사건 및 의미 그리고 물질적인 역사문화경관들이 촘촘히 충전되어 있다. 공간을 주요 연구대상으로 삼는 지리학적 접근에서 시간 요소를 배제할 수 없는 이유이다. 이와 관련해 본고에서는 충청남도 예산군을 사례로 지역의 전통적 모습이나 주요한 변화를 확인할 수 있는 여러 시간단면 상의 지리적 재현물에 대한 역사지리적 접근을 통해 현재적 입장에서 예산 지역의 지역역사지리(regional historical geography)를 구성하고자 하였다. 여기서 지역역사지리의 구성은 지역의 자연환경 및 행정구역, 지명, 지도(고지도, 근·현대지도), 지리지, 경관, 장소 등 제반 지역관련 언표적, 물질적 공간텍스트에 대한 역사지리적 접근을 통해 현재적 입장에서 지역의 역사적 변화과정 및 지역정체성 구성에 관심 갖는 공간과 시간이 통합된 지역연구의 한 방편이라 할 수 있다. 본고는 특정한 연구주제를 중심으로 논지를 전개하는 방식이 아닌, 지역에 압축되어 있는 다양한 시간 층위를 반영한 지역지리 구성의 한 연구 사례를 마련하는 것에 관심을 두었다. 이에 근대 이전 지방 행정의 중심지이자 교통의 결절지로서 현재의 도시 기능을 담당했던 ‘전통도시’ 읍치를 중심으로 근대 이전 지역의 전통적 모습 그리고 근대 이후 국토공간의 재편 과정에서 경험한 지역의 역사적 변화과정 등을 탐색해보고자 하였다. 예나 지금이나 도시는 인구 및 여러 기능 측면에서 지역의 특성을 형성하는 주요한 장소이자 지역 변화를 가늠케 하는 중심적인 지표공간이기 때문이다. 특히 최근 전국의 여러 지자체에서 지역의 역사적 변화과정 및 장소정체성 구성 그리고 역사문화적 자원 확보 등과 관련해 전통도시 읍치에 대한 기초조사와 복원 등에 관심을 기울이고 있는 것은 주목할 만한 일이다. 연구목적과 관련해 구체적으로 예산 일대의 지리적 환경조건 및 행정구역의 역사적 변화, 현 예산 관내에서 유지돼 온 조선시대 예산·덕산·대흥 읍치의 공간구성상 특징과 이들 읍치를 중심으로 한 전통적 교통체계 및 변화, 그리고 지역정체성 구성과 관련해 주목되는 역사문화적 자원으로서 읍치의 진산·주산에 대해 살펴보았다. 작업 수행과 관련해 근대 이전 제작된 지리지와 고지도, 지명지 등의 문헌조사 그리고 극히 제한되기는 하지만 다양한 문화역사 경관 및 장소에 대한 현장답사가 지역역사지리 구성을 위해 병행되어야 하는 필수 작업임을 경험할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

In the space where the concrete trajectory of human life is merged, the various events and meanings, the material historical and cultural landscapes that have been developed and constructed in history are thickly piled up. This is why the time factor can not be ruled out in the geographical approach as the main research element. In this regard, this paper presents the regional historical geography of Yesan County in Chungnam Province from the current perspective through the historical geographical approach to the geographical representations and texts on the cross-section of time. Here, the construction of regional historical geography is based on the historical geographical approach to the linguistic and material spatial texts related to the physical environment and administrative districts, place names, maps (old map and modern map), regional geographies, landscapes and places. This is a way of integrating time and space factors to explore the process of historical change in the region and the composition of regional identity. This study focuses not on the way of developing the argument based on a specific research theme but on the preparation of a case study of regional geography that reflects various time strata compressed in the region. In this paper, I tried to explore the traditional appearance of the pre-modern region and the historical change of the region in the process of restructuring the national territory after the modern period, centering on the Korean traditional city Eupchi . This is because the city is the main place that forms the characteristics of the region in terms of population and functions, and it is the central indicator space that measures regional change. In particular, it is noteworthy that in recent years, various local governments throughout the country have been paying attention to basic research and restoration of traditional city Eupchi in relation to the historical change of the region, the composition of place identity, and the securement of historical and cultural resources. In terms of the purpose of the research, I examined concretely the geographical environment conditions and the historical changes of the administrative districts, the characteristics of the spatial composition of the Yesan, Deoksan and Daeheung Eupchi in the Joseon Dynasty, the changes of traditional transportation system, and Jinsan , Jusan of Eupchi related to the traditional geographical perceptions for constructing the regional identity as a historical and cultural resource of the region. In this study, I identified that it is necessary to investigate the various literatures related to the regional geography, place names, and the old map and to observe various cultural historical landscapes and places, which are very limited.
