국문 초록

갈라디아서를 둘러싼 논쟁의 열기는 식을 줄 모르고 계속되고 있다. 필자 역시 여러 연구들을 통해 이 서신에 대한 나름의 견해를 피력해 왔다. 본 논문은 보다 최근의 논의들을 염두에 둔 일종의 후속적 연구에 해당한다. 지면의 한계 상 필자가 피력했던 논점들을 중심으로 논의를 이어간다. 특별히 필자의 주장에 대한 다른 학자들의 대응에 상대적으로 많은 관심이 주어질 것이다. 첫 단락에서는 칭의의 성격에 대한 계속되는 논쟁을 다룬다. 전통적인 구원론적 해석의 흐름과 달리 사회학적 차원을 강조하는 새 관점의 경향을 언급하고, 특히 칭의를 비구원론 개념으로 재정의하는 톰 라이트의 입장을 비판적으로 살펴본다. 두 번 째 단락에서는 필자의 핵심 주장 중하나인 미래 소망으로서의 칭의 개념에 대해 논의한다. 칭의에 대한 필자의 미래종말론적 해석을 간략히 소개하고, 이에 보다 호의적인 몇몇 최근의 경향들을 소개하면서, 동시에 이들이 이를 현재적 칭의 개념으로 혼합함으로써 야기하는 주석적, 논리적 어려움들을 지적한다. 특히 최근의 논의들 속에서도‘이미’와 ‘아직’ 사이의 구조적 긴장이 제대로 해소 되지 않고 있다는 사실을 비판적으로 검토한다. 세 번 째 단락에서는 갈라디아의 위기의 본질과 관련하여 가장 중요한 개념인‘율법의 행위’ 개념에 대한 전통적 관점과 새 관점의 입장을 최근 논의를 중심으로 살펴본다. 행함에 초점을 맞추는 옛 관점이나 배타주의에 집중하는 새 관점 모두 역사적으로, 주석적으로 확인되지 않은 전제들에 의존하고 있다는 사실과 양 진영 모두 율법의 행위를 포괄적으로 해석하고 있음을 확인한다. 더불어 이런 입장이 바울의 논증 방식에 대해, 그리고 목회적 상황 이해에 대해 야기하는 어려움들을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 네 번 째 단락에서는 갈라디아의 신학적 상황 분석에 가장 결정적인 두 구절인 6:12-13과 5:3에 대한 최근의 논의를 검토하면서, 할례를 강조하면서도 율법을 지키지 않는 선동자들과 할례를 받으려 하면서도 율법 전체를 지킬 의사가 없었던 갈라디아인들을 언급하는 이들 본문에서는“율법준 수를 강조하는 선동자”라는 그림이 나올 수 없다는 사실을 재확인한다. 그 다음으로는 실제 율법의 행위를 율법 전체로 해석하는 중요한 근거로 작용하는“율법의 단일성” 사상을 비판적으로 재검토한다. 자주 제시 되는 야고보서와 순교자 유스티누스의 진술과 더불어 할례와 율법준수를 구분하는 바울의 논의를 검토하면서 율법의 단일성 사상이 바울 해석의 근거로 활용될 수 없다는 사실을 논증한다. 위 논증을 바탕으로 결론에서는 다음과 같은 주장을 재확인한다 곧 갈라디아 교회들의 위기는 율법 전체를 지키려는 노력이 야기한 교리적 문제가 아니었다. 오히려 위기의 본질은 할례와 같은 외면적 정체성의 표지들에 집착한 나머지 오히려 바울이 복음의 본질로 간주한 믿음과 사랑이라는 삶의 자태를 팽개치게 된 실천적 신앙의 위기였다.

영문 초록

Scholarly debate about the nature of the Galatian crisis and Paul’s response thereof, continues without any sign of abating. I have offered my own view on these matters on many different occasions, and the following study is a kind of follow-up to them in view of more recent studies on the letter. Space precludes any detailed report on the recent trends in Galatian scholarship. My intention in this paper is much simpler: to review scholarly discussion on those issues for which I have offered my own, often idiosyncratic, opinions. A few scholars refer to my work either favorably or disapprovingly, and these will naturally take up some of my attention in the paper. The first section deals with the nature of justification. After briefly commenting on the sociologically oriented trend of the NPP which stands in contrast to the soteriological reading of the traditional perspective, the study critically discusses the revisionistic reading of N. T. Wright who redefines justification in a non-soteriological way. The next section discusses the justification as the object of future hope, which is one of the author’s major contentions. After introducing those who have responded to my proposal favorably, the study critically engages with them pointing out the exegetical, logical problems caused by their mixing the futuristic reading with the notion of present justification. The third section examines the two major trends of interpretation of the‘ works of the law’, the key concept in reconstructing the Galatian crisis. The study points out that both lines of interpretation depend on assumptions which cannot be ascertained either historically or exegetically. Then, the study focuses on the comprehensive interpretation of the concept which is common to both sides, exposing the rhetorical and practical problems such a view creates. The forth section examines 6:12-13 and 5:3, two most important passages in determining the nature of the Galatian crisis. The study argues that the notion of a ‘law-observant mission’ cannot be drawn from what Paul explicitly says in these places. This leads to the idea of the unity of the Torah, an important assumption which leads scholars to read the‘ works of the law’ comprehensively. Major sources often presented in support of the view in James and Justin Martyr and Paul’s own discussion of the matter will be examined with the conclusion that the idea of the unity of the law cannot be used to back up a law-observant mission in Galatia. On the basis of the foregoing discussions, the study concludes that the crisis in Galatia is not a doctrinal one caused by the effort to keep the law as a whole but one of religious hypocrisy in which the zeal for outward marks of identity is not accompanied by what Paul considers to be the essence of Christian life, namely, life in the Spiri
