老舍의 《新時代的舊悲劇》에 드러난 인물형상의 서술 양상과 작가의식

국문 초록

《新時代的舊悲劇》은 老舍의 특기라고 할 수 있는 다양한 인간 군상에 대한 예리하고 섬세한 포착과 형상화가 완성도 높게 이루어진 중편소설이다. 老舍는 작품을 창작할 때 다른 어떤 요소들보다도 인물형상 창조에 가장 큰 비중을 두고 작품을 창작해 온 바, 본고에서는 《新時代的舊悲劇》에서 전개되는 내용과 더불어 봉건가정인 진씨 가문의 아버지 陳宏道, 장남인 陳廉伯과 차남 陳廉仲, 그리고 여성인물인 陳廉伯의 아내와 小鳳, 이 주요인물들 각각의 인물형상에 대한 서술을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 새로운 시대인 民國시대를 배경으로 전개되는 이야기 속에서 이들 남성과 여성 등장인물들은 표면적으로는 새로운 시대에 걸맞은 인물인 듯 보이나 실제로는 정도의 차이는 있겠으나 대부분 구시대의 봉건적인 사상에서 벗어나지 못하는 인물들이었다. 陳宏道는 중국 전통문화 담론에 정통한 자칭 유생이자 시인이며 그가 속한 사회의 명사이다. 표면적으로는 도덕적인 군자의 삶을 지향하여 청빈하고 고상한 생활을 추구하는 듯 보이지만 그의 내면은 아들의 불법적인 행위도 묵인하고 그의 致富를 대견스러워하는 허위적인 인물이다. 부친을 숭배하는 장남 陳廉伯의 삶도 이와 다르지 않다. 老舍는 이 작품에서 다양한 인물형상과 서사를 통해 허위의 가면을 쓰고 신시대를 살아가는 구시대적 인물들을 날카롭게 포착하고 통렬하게 비판하는 작가의식을 보여주고 있다. 희극적인 상황과 인물들, 그리고 유머와 풍자가 읽혀지는 서술을 통해 해피엔딩을 예상하던 독자들에게 안겨주는 예기치 않은 결말의 비극성은, 작품의 주제와 작가의식을 더욱 강렬하게 드러내주는 장치로 작용하였음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

An Old Tragedy in a New Age is a medium-length story by Lao She, being characterized by his sharp and delicate capture of various groups of people and high completion level of their embodiment, which are parts of his specialties. When creating his works, he placed the utmost importance on the creation of images of characters more than any other elements. In addition to the content that developed in the story, this study thus focused on its main characters including Chen Hongdao, the father of feudal Chen family, Chen Lianbo, the eldest son of the family, Chen Lianzhong, the second son of the family, and Xiao Feng, a female character that is the wife of Chen Lianbo, as well as the depiction of image of each character. In the story that developed during the Republic of China that represented a new age, those male and female characters seemed to be fit for the new age on the outside. The reality was, however, that most of them were still bound to the old feudal age and its ideologies with some difference in the degree among them. Chen Hongdao was a self-proclaimed Confucian scholar and poet that was versed in the discourse of traditional Chinese culture and also a personality in his community. He appeared to pursue poor but honest noble life oriented toward the life of moral man of virtue on the surface, but he was, in fact, a man of falsehood that overlooked the illegal facts of his son and took pride in his wealth. The life of his eldest son Chen Lianbo, who worshiped his father, was not different from his. In this work, Lao She exhibited his consciousness as a writer to capture outdated characters, who were living in the new age with a mask of falsehood on the face, sharply and criticize them mordantly through the embodiment and narrative of various images of characters. Anticipating a happy ending based on the comical situations and characters and the descriptions that read humor and satire, the readers faced an unexpected tragedy at the end. It was a device to show the theme of the story and his consciousness as a writer more intensely.
