岳刻本 《西廂記》의 출판 환경과 출판 기획

국문 초록

본 논문은 元代 잡극인 《西廂記》의 초기 판본인 《新刊大字魁本全相參增奇妙註釋西廂記》에 관한 연구이다. 岳刻本 《西廂記》는 1498년 지금의 북경인 金臺의 岳刻家에서 출간되었으며 明판본 《西廂記》 가운데 시기적으로 가장 이르면서 완정한 형태의 판본이다. 岳刻本《西廂記》에 주목하는 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 岳刻本 《西廂記》는 이후 《西廂記》 삽화본과 비교해 책의 판형 및 구성 면에서 독특함을 보인다. 둘째, 王實甫의 《西廂記》 외에도 崔鶯鶯과 張生의 이야기, 둘의 사랑이야기에 대한 감상문이나 시 등 관련한 글들을 집대성하고, 또 註釋을 제공하고 있다. 이윤추구를 기본 목적으로 하는 書坊에서 단지 보는 재미를 위해 출간했다고 보기에 다방면에 상당히 공을 들인 측면이 있다. 셋째, 포함된 삽화의 판각 기풍이나 그림의 배치에 있어 1폭에서 8폭까지 연결된 삽화를 보여준다는 점에서 당시 희곡 삽화본이나 이후의 《西廂記》 삽화본과도 크게 차별성을 보인다. 본 논문은 岳刻本 《西廂記》가 가지는 이러한 특징들을 시대적이고 사회적인 배경에 대한 이해를 통해 접근하고자 하였다. 먼저 明代 초기의 출판주체가 되는 官, 書坊, 私家 등의 출판 환경을 살펴보고 출판지역인 북경의 출판 상황에 대해서도 고찰하였다. 또한 岳刻本 《西廂記》의 특징을 이전 시기와 동시기의 여러 간행본들과의 비교를 통해 시기, 내용, 형식 등 다방면으로 고찰하였다. 본 논문은 岳刻本 《西廂記》가 출판에 있어 관행을 따르면서도 나름의 차별성을 가지고 있음을 설명하고자 하였다. 또한 본 연구를 통해 岳刻本 《西廂記》의 이러한 차별성이 책의 편집과 출판에 있어 독자를 고려하고 또 책의 가치를 높이고자 한 출판 기획에서 비롯되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study is about Xinkan dazi kuiben quanxiang canzeng qimiao zhushi Xixiangji, an early block-printed edition of a dramatic work in the Yuan Dynasty, Xixiangji (i.e. Romance of the Western Chamber). Yue’s edition of Xixiangji was published in Yuekejia in present-day Beijing, Jintai, in 1498. It is the earliest, complete version of Xixiangji among the block-printed editions in the Ming Dynasty. Yue’s edition is a one example of commercial success in the publishing business in the Ming Dynasty. Some reasons for this are as follows: First, Yue’s edition shows distinctive features in the size and the structure, comparing to later versions of illustrated Xixiangji. Second, this edition compiled not only Xixiangji written by Wang Shifu, but also a love story between Cui Yingying and Zhang Sheng, reviews of the love story, and related poems, and it also provided their interpretations. Such presentations prove that the aim of Yue’s edition was not only for entertaining in the commercial publishing industry, where making profits is the main purpose. Third, for the engraving styles and illustration arrangement, Yue’s edition shows a large difference to other illustrated works or later versions of illustrated Xixiangji, decorating illustrations on maximally eight consecutive pages. This paper tries to analyze such unique features of Yue’s edition via the understanding of the social background of the time. First of all, the works done by the publishers in the early Ming Dynasty, such as the officers, non-governmental groups, and the private sector; and the publishing environment in the Beijing areas, were investigated. Also, comparing to various editions made in the same and previous periods, this study looked into Yue’s edition based on the period, contents, structure, and etc. The researcher tried to explain that Yue’s edition was a conventional and, at the same time exceptional publication made by the publishing planning. In addition, such extraordinary publishing was turned out to be intentionally made to consider readers and increase the value of the work.
