국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 외국인가정 자녀 위주로 구성된 특별학급 운영 사례를 살펴보고 외국인가정 자녀를 위한 학교교육의 현실과 개선 방향을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 경기도 S 초등학교 특별학급의 수업을 관찰하고 특별학급 및 협력학급 담임교사, 원어민 강사와 면담을 실시하고 이를 분석하였다. 특별학급 수업에서는 구성원의 특성을 고려하여 교사의 개별 지도와 상황 맥락적인 대응이 많이 나타났고 전반적으로 자유로운 분위기에서 수업이 진행되었다. 특별학급 담임교사는 특별학급 교사로서 자부심과 아쉬움을 모두 가지고 있었고 외국인가정 자녀의 급속한 유입 및 동료 교사와의 협력적 관계 미흡 등으로 인한 어려움을 느끼고 있었다. 협력학급 담임교사는 외국인가정 자녀에 대한 학습 지도의 어려움을, 외국인 강사는 시간제 근무 환경의 어려움과 비효율을 주로 언급하였다. 외국인가정자녀를 위한 학교교육의 효과를 높이기 위해서는 외국인가정 자녀 교육에 대한 관점과 방향의 전환, 교사와 학부모의 소통 강화를 위한 원어민 강사지원, 교육 당국 수준에서의 외국인가정 자녀용 수업 보조 자료 개발, 외국인가정 학생을 위한 기초교육 전담기구 운영 등이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study aims to look into the case of the foreign-born students’ classes which are composed mainly of foreign workers’ children and to provide suggestions for schools to educate them more effectively. For this purpose, classroom observations on the foreign-born students’ classes and interviews with the teachers and assistants were conducted in S elementary school in Gyeonggi province. The result shows that teachers have been found to use personalized teaching and contextual responses in the foreign-born students’ classes. The atmosphere of the instruction is free in general. The teachers in charge of the foreign-born students’ classes have both pride and difficulty in caring for the students. They sometimes feel stressed because of a lack of cooperation with other teachers. A teacher in charge of a class composed mainly of Korean students has trouble in instructing the foreign-born students who are not good at speaking Korean. The language assistants who help the teachers and foreign-born students with the students’ native language pointed out the inefficiency of the part-time job system. In order to enhance the effectiveness of education for foreign-born students, it is necessary to change the prospective and the direction of the education for them. More support for the language assistants is also needed to facilitate smooth communications between teachers and parents. It is also important to develop supplementary learning materials for foreign-born students as well as establish and manage a new institution that will assume full charge of the basic education for the foreigners’ children.
