해방 이후 한국 상례 변화와 사회문화적 의미

국문 초록

일반적으로 관혼상제 의례 중 상례는 변화에 보수적이어서 전통적 모습이 그대로 남아 있다고 여기기 쉽다. 하지만 상례는 혼례와 더불어 현대사회에서 가장 극적인 변화를 경험한 통과의례이다. 이 연구의 목적은 해방 이후 한국 상례(喪禮) 변화 유인 요인을 제도 및 사회문화 차원에서 검토하고, 실제 상례 변화 양상을 유인하는 제도의 실효성과 사회문화적 의미를 탐색ㆍ분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 해석주의 사회과학적 관점과 삼각검증을 적용하여 해방 이후의 연구논문, 각종 보고서, 신문보도자료 등 다양한 문헌자료를 종단적으로 비교분석하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면 해방 이후 한국 상례는 제도와 사회문화적 환경이 바뀜에 따라 장법이 매장에서 화장으로 변화하고, 음식접대 관행 및 상복 변화하고 상일장이 정착하는 등 의례 절차가 간소화하였으며, 장례식장, 장례전문지도사, 상조회사가 등장하는 등 상례산업화가 진행되었다. 이러한 변화를 유인하는데 있어서 제도는 관습의 테두리를 변형할 만큼 현실적ㆍ실용적이지 못하거나, 사회문화적 환경 변화에 의해 새로운 제도가 만들어지거나, 시대 현실을 반영하지 않고 지나치게 앞서서 시행되어 사회문화적 여건이 부합되는 시점에 이르러 수십 년의 세월이 소요된 다음에야 실효성을 갖게 되는 한계를 드러냈다. 결론적으로 의례의 변화는 제도 그 자체가 아니라 사회문화적 환경 변화, 가치의식체계의 변화를 수반하며 자생적으로 생겨난다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 연구 결과에 기초하여 의례와 관련된 제도 개발 방향에 대해 제언하였다.

영문 초록

Generally, funeral rites are considered so conservative against social changes that remain as traditional forms. But funeral rites have experienced dramatic changes in their forms and meanings with modernization of Korea after the Liberation from Japan. This paper aims to examine the changes of funeral rites in Korea according to changes of legalistic institutions and sociocultural factors since the Liberation, and to demonstrate the way of people’s ritual practice. The research conducted in the perspective of interpretive science and way of triangulation verification, and analyzed longitudinally. By the result of research, modern funeral rites changed its forms with socio-cultural change as follows: firstly, the mode of funeral and cremation system changed from burial into cremation. Secondly, the procedures of funeral rituals were simplified with settlement of cremation on the third day after death and the transition of mourning dress from traditional style to western style. Thirdly, funeral rites are industrialized with the appearance of funeral halls, funeral directors, and funeral service companies. Even though legalistic institutions were made by the change of socio-cultural background, they were not flexible enough to transform the custom of ritual. Because legalistic institutions were acted ahead of times not reflecting social realities, they could become effective a few decades later when socio-cultural environment factors coincide. To conclude, ritual changes autonomically accompanying not legalistic institutions, but socio-cultural environment factors and value system. In the wake of the study result, some improvement plans of legalistic institution on funeral rites were suggested.
