소지역 단위의 지역역사지리학 연구 시론

국문 초록

지역역사지리학(regional historical geography)은 한 지역의 위치와 지리적 조건이 사회적 관계 및 역사적 사건과 어떻게 연동하는지를 검토한다. 이를 바탕으로 해당 지역의 경관 변화, 과거의 지역 의식과 심상지리, 그리고 지역 정체성과 관련된 문제를 탐구한다. 이 연구는 국내외 지역역사지리학의연구가 중규모 이상의 지역에 편중되어었음을 지적하는 한편 우리나라의 소지역이 갖는 사회문화적 단위성과 역사성에 의미를 두면서, 부평이라는 ‘소지역(local-scale region)’을 대상으로 지역역사지리학 연구의 논리를 구상하고 이를 실천하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 서론에서 구상한 논리를 토대로 본론에서는 ‘부평의 위치적 조건과 지리적환경 → 주요 인문지리적 요소와 그 변천 → 문화 경관과 상징적 장소들’에 관해 차례로 서술하였다. 특히 ‘문화 경관과 상징적 장소들’에 관한 서술에 있어서는 풍수지리와 읍치의 경관 조성, 종교 및 영역 의식의 장소들, 역사적 의미를 내포한 경관, 사회적 과정을 담지한 주요 지명 경관 등 네 가지 항목이 유의미하다고 보았다. 앞으로 다양한 지리적 성격을 가진 소지역들에 적용해 보는 후속 연구들을 통해 본 연구에서 제시한 논리와 실천이 지역 특수적인지 아닌지 문제를 비롯해 소지역을 대상으로 한 지역역사지리학의 연구 논리를 보다 정교화해 갈 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Regional historical geography investigates the linkage among the location, geographical milieu, social relationships, historical events in a region. On the basis on this investigation, it makes researches in landscape change, regional consciousness and imagined geographies, regional identities through times. The author pointed out that the existing studies made too much of large-scale region, put emphasis on the socio-cultural meaning and historical durability of the local-scale region in the Korean history, and aimed to design and practice the framework for the regional historical geography of a local-scale region in case of Bupyeong area, Incheon. In the main discourses, this study developed into ‘the location and geographical milieu→human geographies→cultural landscapes and places’ of the study area. In Particular, the author underscored the Fengsui and landscapes of the town seat, the places related with religions and territorial consciousness, the landscapes that involved historical significances, and the place names that implied social processes. It is required further examination to elaborate the framework by applying the logic that is presented in this study in various characteristics of local-scale regions.
