돌봄은 세대 간에 대갚음되는가?

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 돌봄을 통한 세대 간의 호혜적 관계의 성립 여부를 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 과거에 성인자녀를 위해 모가 행한 아동(손자녀) 돌봄이 이후 모에 대한 성인자녀의 돌봄 행위에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보았다. 연구의 수행을 위해 장기적 호혜 모델을 이론적 기초로 삼았고, 고령화연구패널조사의 1차(2006년)부터 4차(2012년)까지의 자료를 사용하여 322명의 모(母)와 1,386명의 성인자녀를 분석 대상자로 삼았다. 더불어 한 명의 모 내에 다수의 성인자녀가 속해 있는 관계적 구조를 고려하여 모와 성인자녀의 관계를 일대일 대응의 관계로 구성하고, 다수준 분석 방법을 이용하여 연구를 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 과거에 모가 성인자녀를 위해 제공한 아동(손자녀) 돌봄 지원은 이후 모에 대한 성인자녀의 신체적 돌봄 행위에 부적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 모가 아동(손자녀) 돌봄을 위해 투입한 시간적 양 또한 그것이 많을수록 이후 성인자녀의 돌봄 행위가 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과를 통해 돌봄을 통한 세대 간의 호혜적 관계 성립은 현 시점에서 논하기 어렵다는 결론을 도출하였고, 이와 같은 결과가 가구 내에 존재하는 또 다른 의존자(아동)에 의한 것일 수 있음을 함께 논하였다. 본 연구는 위와 같은 결과를 바탕으로 이론적 및 정책적 함의를 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine whether reciprocal relationships between generations are built based on care. For the purpose, this study investigated how grandmaternal child care in the past affects adult children’s caring behaviors to their elderly mothers. The long-term reciprocity model was adopted as theoretical framework for this study and I used data from the first wave (in 2006) to the forth wave (in 2012) of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. A comprehensive, multi-level analysis was conducted on a nationwide sample of 322 elderly mothers and their 1,386 adult children and I considered the relationship between elderly mother and their adult children as one-to-one relationships while multiple children are nested in their mother. The results suggested that past grandmaternal child care had negative effects on later care from adult children to their elderly mothers. Additionally, the increasing amount of time in providing care for grandchildren was negatively associated with adult children’s caring behaviors to their elderly mothers. The results were not able to affirm that the long-term reciprocity relationships between generations were established and maintained through mutual care behaviors. However, this study suggested the possibility the results were generated by another dependent family member (i.e. young children). Theoretical and policy implications of these findings regarding the long-term reciprocal relationships are discussed.
