국문 초록

칼빈은 지성 중심의 자율적 인식론을 강하게 배격했으며 지성의 근본이 신 하나님을 아는 것이 진정한 자기 자신을 아는 지식임을 강조했다. 바른 성경적 인식론은 하나님에게서 출발해서 지성을 도구로 삼는 것이지 결코 지성에서 출발해서 그 지성으로 하나님을 판단하는 것이 아님을 칼빈은 경고하고 있다. 또한 칼빈은 아퀴나스와는 달리 죄의 지적 영향(the noetic effect of sin)을 강조한다. 죄의 영향을 받은 지성은 스스로 자율성, 중립성, 독립성 등을 가질 수 없고 하나님이 만드신 질서에 의존할 수밖에 없다. 지성을 포함한 인간의 모든 행위가 하나님을 힘입어 된 것이므로(행 17:28), 칼빈은 그 인식론적 행위의 순간 하나님을 인정하게 된다고 강조한다. 칼빈은 이성의 도구성(instrumentality)을 부인한 것이 아니라 오히려 이성을 가능하게 하는 근본이신 하나님을 부인하는 자율적 이성을 비판한 것이다. 칼빈의 인식론은 한마디로 성경을 그 중심에 놓고 그 주변에 도움이 되는 사상적 혹은 신학적 방법론들을 동원하는 구조라고 하겠다. 이러한 칼빈의 인식론은 성경에 부합되지 않는 로마 가톨릭 교회의 신학과 사상에 도전할 수 있는 동기와 이유를 제공했다.

영문 초록

Calvin strongly opposes to the autonomous epistemology centering around human reason. And he emphasizes that to know God as the ground of intellect is the true knowledge of man. For Calvin, the Biblical epistemology starts with God and uses human knowledge as an instrument, not starts with reason and judges Him with it. Unlike Aquinas, Calvin emphasize the noetic effect of sin in an affirmative way. The intellect affected by sin can t be autonomous, neutral, or independent by itself, rather must be dependent upon the order of God. Since all human activities, including intellect, become possible in God(Acts 17:28), Calvin claims that at the moment of epistemological activity of man, he must acknowledge the epistemological possibility by God. Calvin never denied the instrumentality of reason, but declined the autonomous reason denying its ground. In sum, the epistemology of Calvin centers around the Scriptures and asks for all kinds of philosophical and theological methods as complementary. This kind of epistemology of Calvin was clear enough to oppose to the theology and thoughts of Roman Catholic church and solid enough to provide the motive and reason for the opposition.
