국문 초록

세월호 참사는 우리 사회 ‘민주주의’와 ‘교육’이 심각한 위기 상황임을 일깨운 비극적 사건이며, 사고 이후 계속되는 사회정치적 혼란과 대립으로 인해 침몰은 아직도 현재 진행 중이다. 참사 이후 달라진 삶으로의 전환을 희망하며, 이 연구는 듀이의 『민주주의와 교육』에 근거하여 오늘의 사회와 교육의 문제를 탐구하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 실천철학자, 사회철학자, 교육철학자로서 듀이의 관점에 비추어 세월호 참사가 어떤 의미에서 교육철학적 탐구를 요하는 일인지 짚어본다. 다음으로 참사를 둘러싸고 회자된 문제의 말들을 선별하여 그 이면에서 갈등하는 가치의 문제를 분석해본다. 이로써 위기의 본질적 근원에는 수단과 목적, 개인과 사회, 이론과 실천의 이원론적 대립을 심화시켜온 사회현실과 의식의 한계가 가로놓여있음을 밝힌다. 이는 듀이가 풀어내고자 했던 당대의 철학과 현실과 교육의 문제와도 일맥상통한 것이다. 끝으로 『민주주의와 교육』에 담긴 교육혁신 과제의 현재적 의미를 재조명하고, 세월호 참사 이후로 나아가기 위한 새로운 읽기 필요성을 제안한다.

영문 초록

Sewol Ferry disaster in 2014 awakened most tragically the current critical situation of our society, in which the foundational state of ‘democracy’ and ‘education’ has become seriously questionable. Furthermore, the exacerbating socio-political conflicts and rupture since the disaster suggests that the tragic sinking is still ongoing. Based on the critical reflection that communal efforts are urgently needed to find a way towards living after the Sewol Ferry disaster, this study aims at exploring the deep-rooted problems and new possibilities of social reality and education by re-reading Dewey’s Democracy and Education for today. First of all, the ways in which Dewey conceives the intrinsic relation of philosophy, social problems and education are dealt with so as to illuminate why and how Sewol Ferry disaster is to be taken to be a genuine problematic situation for philosophers of education. Secondly, recurring frustrating words regarding the Sewol are selectively analyzed so as to reveal the underlying problematic notions that assumes dualistic oppositions between means and ends, the individual and the social, mind and body, which Dewey has tackled and elaborated in the centennial book. Thirdly, it is shown that Dewey’s critical and constructive ideas for reconstructing philosophy, social reality and education hand in hand may have significant implications for us today.
