화이트헤드의 과정철학에 비추어 본 인격의 형성 과정 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 화이트헤드(A. N. Whitehead)의 과정철학에 비추어 인격의 의미, 인격의 형성과정, 그리고 인격의 함양 방법을 고찰하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 화이트헤드는 인격체를 일반적인 의미와 달리 인격적 경험의 요소들에 의해 형성된 결합체로 정의하고, 인격적 결합체를 ‘인격적 질서’를 지니고 있는 ‘인격적 사회’라고 보았다. ‘인격적 사회’의 특징은 그 사회의 구성원들이 한정 특성인 ‘영원한 객체’를 공유하고 있으며, 자립적이고, 발생적 관계에 의해 그것을 순차적으로 계승한다는 것이다. 그리고 통합적 제어와 새로운 질서의 창조가 이루어진다는 점 또한 인격적 사회의 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 과정철학의 핵심은 현실적 존재의 자기 창출 과정, 곧 미시적 과정인 합생의 과정이다. 이 과정은 과거의 제약에서 벗어나 새로움을 실현하는 창조의 과정이기도 하다. 인격의 형성 과정은 인격적 경험의 주체로서의 ‘현실적 존재’의 합생 과정, 즉 수용과 공감, 개념적 평가, 선택과 결정, 만족으로 재구성할 수 있다. 화이트헤드는 인격의 함양을 위해 다양한 가치의 이해와 심미적 감성의 계발을 중시한다. 그가 상정하는 교육받은 인격인이란 자유와 규율의 조화, 교양과 전문성을 겸비한 ‘스타일(style)’을 지닌 존재이다. 화이트헤드가 보여주는 ‘인격의 형성 과정’은 인격에 대한 기존의 인격의 개념이 안고 있는 난점을 극복할 수 있는 가능성을 열어줄 것으로 보이며, 전통적인 덕목 중심의 인격교육과정의 한계를 보완할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것으로 기대된다. 따라서 덕목 중심의 인격교육이 아니라 과정 중심의 인격교육 방법에 대한 보다 활발한 논의가 있어야 할 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning and the formation-process of ‘person’ and finally the way of person-building in the view of A. N. Whitehead s Process Philosophy. Whitehead defines person as the nexus formed by the elements of personal experience unlike the mundane meaning. He considers the personal nexus as the ‘personal society’ with the ‘personal order’. The ‘personal society’ is characterized by the fact that the community members share the ‘eternal object’, as the defining feature of the society and inherit that by the voluntary and genetic relationship. Integrated control and the creation of a new order system also could be the characteristic of the ‘personal society’. The essence of process-philosophy is on the process of self-formation of ‘actual entity’ which is equal to the process of concrescence, a microscopic process. This is the process of creation, realizing newness out of the past restrictions. The formation-process of ‘person’ is the process of concrescence of ‘actual entity’ as the subject of personal experience and it consists of receiving and sympathy, conceptual valuation, selecting and decision, and satisfaction. Whitehead places importance on understanding of various values and the growth of aesthetic sense for person-building. An educated man in Whitehead’s view is the existence who takes the sense of ‘style’, possessing culture and expertise as well as harmonization of freedom and discipline. The process of person-formation in Whitehead’s perspective is expected to open the possibility of overcoming the obstacle of the existing concept of person and to offer the chance to compensate for the limit of the traditional, virtue-centered curriculum of person-education. Therefore, the discuss on the way of moving from ‘virtue-centered’ to ‘process-oriented’ in person-education is highly needed.
