Nondisabled People Talk About Disability and Disabled People

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국영화 <오아시스>(2002)와 <말아톤>(2005)에 나타난 장애재현과 담론을 관객수용분석의 관점에서 접근하여 질적 방법으로 분석하였다. 영화 속에서 다뤄진 장애와 장애인에 대한 관객의 인식과 수용과정을 파악하기 위해 19명의 비장애인 대학원생을 대상으로 포커스 그룹과 심층인터뷰를 실시하였다. 분석결과 장애학적 관점에서 중요한 세 가지 주제가 도출되었다: 1)복합적 현상으로서의 장애, 2)비장애 중심적 상징으로서 전유된 장애, 3)정상성에 동화·흡수된 장애. 첫째, 참여자들은 의료화된 관점과 함께 젠더화와 계층화된 시각으로 장애와 장애관련 등장인물들을 인식·수용했다. 둘째, 참여자들은 장애인의 스테레오타입화된 이미지와 상징을 차용하여, 장애인들이 아닌, 자신들의 사회적 어려움을 표현했다. 셋째, 참여자들은 영화 속에서 비장애와 남성중심적으로 묘사된 장애여성의 성과 사랑(오아시스)과 장애남성의 장애극복(말아톤)을 정상과 비장애 중심적 관점에서 이해하고 공감을 표시했다. 참여자들의 장애인물에 대한 인식과 수용은 <오아시스>와 <말아톤>이 장애에 대한 스테레오타입 뿐만 아니라 비장애중심적인 정상성을 확대·재생산할 수 있다는 점을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This qualitative study examines discourses and representations of disability in two highly acclaimed Korean films, Oasis(2002), directed by Changdong Lee, and Malaton(2005), directed by Yoonchul Jung, in terms of audience reception. To better comprehend such discourses and representations, nineteen graduate students watched the films in their entirety and shared their understandings of disability and disabled people in the films and social world. Using disability studies as a theoretical lens and focus groups and individual interviews as a research method tool, this study analyzes the interview data and the three following themes have emerged; 1)disability as a complex phenomenon; 2)disability appropriated as an ableist symbol; and 3)disability assimilated into normalcy. Based on the findings, several implications are provided and discussed in the conclusion.
