성인교육에서 비판적 사고의 의미와 가르침의 원리

국문 초록

평생교육은 사회변화와 개혁을 뒷받침하는 역할을 수행해왔다. 한국의 평생교육 역시 비판적 의식 향상을 위한 민중교육이 오랫동안 실천되어 왔다. 그러나 현재의 평생교육은 사회적이고 정치적 문제에 대해 무관심하며, 정책 중심 연구와 실천에 집중하는 보수적 태도를 견지하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 평생교육의 비판적 전통인 비판적 성인교육에 대해 다시금 주목하여 비판적 사고의 개념을 무엇으로 보고 있는지 검토하고, 이를 성인학습자에게 가르치기 위한 가르침의 원리는 무엇인지 논의하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 성인교육에서 비판적 사고는 개인에게 영향을 미치는 억압과 문제를 인식하고 이를 변화시키기 위한 대안을 찾아내는 사회적 실천 활동이라는 것을 확인했다. 또한 비판적 사고를 가르치는 교육은 비판적 사고를 실현하기 위한 정치적·생활적 프락시스를 목적으로 하며, 이를 가르치는 성인교육자는 자신의 교육 실천에 변화를 추구하며 현실세계에서 교육과 사회 변화의 주체가 되는 존재임을 확인하였다. 대화는 가르침의 주요한 방법이며, 이를 가능하게 하는 조건을 조성하는 것이 중요하다. 성인학습자의 생활과 삶은 이러한 교육의 내용이 되며, 교육방법으로서 대화는 내용을 생성하는 도구로도 주요한 역할을 한다.

영문 초록

Lifelong education traditionally has carried out a role of supporting conscientization and social reform. In a case of Korean lifelong education, popular education to elevate critical conscientization for people has been practiced for a long time. But currently, lifelong education is indifferent to social and political issues, and holds on to conservative stance by focusing on policy and practice. So, this study tries to see critical adult education that is isolated from central discussion of lifelong education, and aims to search for discussions in the aspect of teaching. To do this, the meaning of critical thinking on critical adult education is reviewed and key principles on critical teaching are examined. As a result, it is confirmed that critical thinking in adult education is a social practice that finds out alternative solutions to change oppressive and problematic condition that affect individuals. Education that teaches critical thinking aims to political and life praxis to actualize critical thinking, and adult educator who teaches critical thinking pursues change in his/her own educational practice and become a subject of educational and social change in the real world. Conversation is a major method for teaching, and making a condition for conversation is important. The life of an adult learner is the content of this education, and conversation as a educational method plays an important role that generates educational content.
