영문 초록

This study aimed to improve the self-identity of college students through the adulthood tea ceremony and appreciation for the adult initiation ceremony in the fast-paced modern world with its hard diversity. The five session program developed by the meta-analysis method, which combines literature review, data collection of the traditional seongnyeonrye (adult initiation ceremony), and Focus Group Interview (F.G.I.), was applied to 49 students during their first year of university. The paired sample t-test was performed in order to verify the effect of the tea ceremony on their improving self-identity. The results showed that the average ego identity scores of the participants before and after the program was 165.57 (SD 25.24) and 161.94 (SD 28.17), respectively, showing a significant difference in I (T = -3.564). In their program impression writings, the participants stated they obtained a sense of duty and responsibility as an adult through the adulthood tea ceremony and receiving their “ja (special name)”. In addition, they were able to build a bond of sympathy and share the experience being accepted as an adult when their fellow students and older members of the community participated together with them in the ceremony. This study showed that the adulthood tea ceremony program, reflecting the traditional seongnyeonrye (adult initiation ceremony), increased the self-identity of the participants, and enabled them to obtain the correct awareness of the traditional culture, as well as helping to equip them with the basic attitude of adulthood.
