영문 초록

The First Born (1897) dramatizes the everyday life of Chinese immigrants in Chinatown, San Francisco, in the late 19th century. This play significantly becomes a piece of evidence to prove that at that time there was occurring an indigenous and serious realism drama in American, when melodrama was dominating genre of drama and theatre convention. A series of discoveries in the play- the author's stance as an acute observer; depiction of Chinese immigrants not as a type but as an individual; suggestion of the social problems within the community, etc.; - prove the play's quality as a serious realism drama. The play also touches on the changed social position and status of the contemporary Chinese immigrants along with their mature conscious of the society in reality, compared with the earlier days of immigration in the 1850s. Adding to the literary values, The First Born functions as a historio-cultural document to gauge American society's sentiment on the Chinese question of the time, which should be an important part of US immigration history.
