존 듀이 성장이론에 나타난 습관의 교육적 의의

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 듀이의 성장이론을 이해하고 그것을 바탕으로 습관의 의미를 분석하여 그 교육적 의의를 밝히는데 있다. 듀이는 성장이론에서 습관을 새롭게 해석하여 그 가치를 확대하였으며, 이러한 그의 습관 개념에 대한 이해는 개인의 고정적이고 자동화된 수행으로서의 일반적인 습관의 개념을 벗어나게 함으로써 습관의 교육적 의미와 그 적용의 범위를 확대하였다. 듀이는 수동적이고 고정된 행동 특징으로서의 일반적인 습관의 개념을 타고난 힘들의 조직과 경향성으로 새롭게 해석하였으며, 습관의 원리로 가소성, 계속성, 환경과의 상호작용, 반복이 아닌 성공을 기반으로 하며, 습관의 일반적 특징인 수동적, 개인적, 고정된 성격을 넘어 능동적, 사회적, 지성적 특성을 가짐을 알 수 있었다. 결국 성장이론에 근거한 습관은 능동적 습관을 통해 삶의 계속적 성장을 가능하게 하고, 사회적 습관을 통해 공동체 교육에 기여하게 하며, 지성적 습관을 통해 전통적 교육의 심신 이원론적 관점을 극복하게 한다는 점에서 교육적 의의를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to analyze the concept of habit that appeared in John Dewey's theory of Growth Education and examine its educational implication. John Dewey newly interpreted habit in growth theory to expand the value and the understanding of his concept of habit expanded the educational meaning of habit and its scope of application by taking it outside the typical concept of habit as an individual's fixed and automated performance. Dewey newly interpreted the typical concept of habit, which is commonly known as the passive and fixed behavioral characteristics, as the organization and tendency of innate powers and the principle of habit manifested that it is based on plasticity, continuity, interaction with environment, and success rather than repetition with active, social, and intellectual characteristics beyond the general characteristics of habit which are passive, individual, and fixed. In this context, the habit based on growth theory has educational meaning as it allows continuous growth of life through active habits, contributes to community education by developing social habits, and makes it possible to overcome the dualistic perspective of traditional education through intellectual habits.
