보이드 보드의 삶과 교육사상: ‘삶의 방식’으로서의 민주주의

국문 초록

이 연구는 프래그머티즘의 주요한 사상가였으며 진보적 교육에 큰 영향을 미쳤던 보이드 보드의 삶, 그리고 민주주의와 민주교육에 대한 그의 사상을 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 프래그머티스트 보드에게 ‘다수에 의한 지배(majority rule)’ 라는 정치적 영역에 한정하여 이해한 초기미국의 민주주의는 지속적으로 변화하고 있는 사회에 더 이상 적합하지 않은 개념이었다. 즉 보드에게 있어 삶에 대한 어떠한 방향과 관점도 제시하지 않으면서 단순히 의견의 대립이나 갈등을 해결하는 ‘방법(method)’을 의미하는 미국의 전통적 민주주의 개념은 본질적으로 시대에 뒤떨어져 있고 불합리한 것이었다. 그러므로 보드는 20세기 새로운 과학기술의 시대에 적합한 민주주의의 개념을 재정의 할 필요가 있음을 강조하면서 ‘삶의 방식(a way of life)’으로서의 민주주의 개념을 제언한다. 구체적으로 보드는 삶의 방식으로서의 민주주의는 공통의 관심사와 관심사의 영역을 지속적으로 확대해가는 것이라고 보았다. 보드가 제의한 이러한 ‘공통된관심사의 확장’ 개념은 건강한 민주주의 사회를 위한 교육의 비전을 제공한다. 민주주의를 공통의 관심사의 지속적인 확대로 이해하고 이것이 학교에서 적용되며 더 나아가 학생들이 삶에 서 실천하도록 격려된다면 학교는 타인에 대한 이해, 상호간에 이루어지는 관대한 대화, 특수한 관심사보다 공통된 관심사를 볼 수 있는 시야, 그리고 관심사를 조정하는 지성과 태도를 배우고 익히는 장소가 될 것이다. 보드는 이러한 삶의 방식으로서의 민주주의를 찾고 발견해야 하는 것이 교육의 사명이며 학교가 존재하는 이유라고 보았다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the life and educational thought of Boyd H. Bode who was a notable pragmatist and greatly influenced the progressive education movement in the first half of the twentieth century. Bode thought that the traditional democratic principle of majority rule, which limits our understanding of democracy in political context, is not any more appropriate in a complex and continually changing modern society. Therefore, Bode attempted to redefine what democracy means in technological age and thought of democracy as a ‘way of life.’ Bode further specified his conception of democracy as ‘the continuous widening of the area of common interests and concerns.’ Bode’s conception on democracy provides important implications for education in healthy democratic societies. When democracy is understood as continuous extension of common interests, and this is applied in school and its classrooms, students will cultivate democratic dispositions to see and understand the interest of others and their point of view. Furthermore, in the democratic environment, schools will be a place where students learn to permit common interests to outweigh special interests and increase their intellectual ability in the process of mediating conflicting interests and creating a larger ideal. In short, for pragmatist Bode, helping students to overcome their selfishness and be sensitive toward other people and their interest, which will make democracy work, was the primary purpose of education and schooling. In this regard, moral education is of great significance in Bode’s vision for education.
