민중신학의 천년왕국사상에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

한국 기독교는 초기부터 종말론에 지대한 관심을 지니고 있었으며, 그리스도의 재림을 신앙생활과 교리의 핵심적인 부분으로 수용하였다. 또한 예수 그리스도의 재림이야말로 하나님의 목적과 성경을 이해하는 데에 필수적인 요소로 인식해 왔다. 그러나 자칫하면 하나님 나라의 포괄적인 측면을 간과 한 채 임박한 재림을 강조하다보면, 타계지향적 종말신앙을 강화하면서 개인 경건에 치우치는 경향이 나타날 수 있다. 이렇게 되면, 이 세상에서의 책임과 의무를 소홀히 하고 내세에서의 영혼구원만을 중시하는 신앙으로 편향될 수 있다. 그런 면에서 민중신학의 기원은 이러한 상황과 무관하지 않으며, 1970 년대 독재적인 군사정권 시대에 시작되었다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 상황에서 대부분의 한국교회는 당시의 핍박받고 가난한 자들에게 관심을 갖지 못했던 것이 사실이다. 1975년을 기점으로 소수의 신학자들이 핍박받고 가난한 자 들, 즉 “민중”을 신학의 주체로 삼아 민중신학을 전개하였다. 본고는 천년왕 국사상을 중점으로 고찰하면서 민중신학의 전개과정과 주요한 특징들이 어떻게 형성되었는지, 과연 민중신학의 천년왕국사상이 성경적인 개념과 부합 하는지를 논구해 가면서, 진리에 근거한 신학만이 참된 구원을 이룬다는 사 실을 강조하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Korean Christians were primarily concerned with eschatology, and they found in the doctrine of the literal coming of Christ the key to the understanding of other aspects of Christian experience and doctrine. And also they found in the second coming of Christ not only the explanation of all the purposes of God, also the key to the understanding of the Bible. But it should be noted that apocalyptic convictions can form the core of personal piety. The emphasis on the personal piety of Korean Christians has been criticized to some degree for producing an unbalanced otherworldliness. Some looked upon the Christian faith as a means of escaping from this evil world and merely as a guide to the life hereafter. Such a tendency naturally led to the neglect of the wholistic aspect of the gospel. Minjung theology arose in the middle of the 1970s against background of the political oppression of the dictatorial military regime and the economic deprivation of urban workers and rural peasants in South Korea. In this situation, most of Korean churches were not concerned with the poor and the oppressed. This was the context in which the liberation theology in South America began to exert a powerful influence on some liberal Korean theologians. Beginning in 1975, some progressive theologians unified their references to the poor and oppressed as minjung and began to develop minjung theology. With a particular attention to millennialism in minjung theology, this paper will critically trace the process of formation of minjung theology, its main features, and prove that only a theology being faithful to biblical truth can bring about real salvation or liberation.
