영문 초록

It is well known that Nietzsche was greatly excited by Dostoevsky's Notes from the House of the Dead, when he first read it. It is also known that he took Orlov, the infamous brigand in the novel as the archetype of his Superman. This led some scholars to believe that the two writers share common idea on the victory of human spirit. However, they are rather antithetical to each other in a very important matter, that is human freedom. Nietzsche created his Superman based on Orlov's strength, self-control, freedom from fear, and absence of conscience and penitence. The Superman goes beyond the good and evil and ultimately turns out to be a formidable Man-God. While the absence of the sense of morality is a virtue for Nietzsche, that feature of Orlov is for Dostoevsky the sign of evil, the most terrible transgression against God-Man. Orlov's freedom is a destructive power, a will to power, and another form of slavery. For Dostoevsky, Orlov and his legion eventually collapse through de-evolution. Freedom for Dostoevsky is possible only in Christ, through Christ.
