조선중기 지눌 사상의 전승 양상

국문 초록

지눌 사상의 계승 및 영향 관계를 파악하는 방법으로는 크게 세 가지가 있다. 첫째, 인적 계승 관계를 통한 연구 방법, 둘째, 저술 내용분석을 통한 연구 방법, 셋째, 서적 전승 양상을 통한 연구 방법이다. 이 세 가지 연구 방법 중 어떤 방법을 택하느냐에 따라 조선시대 지눌 사상의 계승과 영향에 대한 평가는 달라진다. 첫째, 인적 계승 관계를 통해 연구할 경우, 조선후기 불교계가 임제태고법통설을 수용하여 조선전기 불교사를 그 법통에 따라 재구성하였으므로, 고려말 임제 법통 수용 이전의 전통인 지눌 사상은 계승되기 어려웠다고 파악될 수밖에 없다. 반면, 둘째와 셋째의 저술 내용이나 서적 전승의 분석을 통한 방법을 통해 볼 때 지눌 사상의 영향력은 상당하였다고 평가하지 않을 수 없다. 우선 조선초기의 기화, 조선중기의 휴정의 저술에 나타나는, 간화선을 중시하면서도 돈오점수와 선교겸수를 지향하는 사상 경향은 지눌의 사상적 영향력을 고려하지 않고서는 이해하기 어려워 보인다. 그런데 16세기는 불교서적 간행이 급증하면서 비로소 불서의 간행량 분석을 통해 불교계 사상 경향의 변화를 연구할 수 있게 된 시기이다. 간행 서적을 통해 불교 사상의 전승 양상을 구체적으로 파악할 수 있게 된 시기인데, 이 시기에 지눌이 저술하거나 중시한 서적이 다량 간행되기 시작하였다. 간행 불서 및 관련 기록의 분석을 통해 볼 때, 고려중기 이래 주요 사상 전통으로 전승돼 오던 지눌의 사상은 16세기 초 지엄에 의해 수용돼 강학체계 형성의 토대가 되었으며, 이 강학체계는 16세기 후반 휴정과 선수 등의 영향력 아래 확산되기 시작하였다. 17세기에 이 강학체계는 휴정과 선수의 문도들에 의해 이력과정으로 확립되어 보편적으로 수용돼 갔고, 조선후기 불교계의 특징적인 사상 체계로서 전승되었다. 이러한 조선중기 지눌 사상의 전승 양상은 고려 중기의 불교 사상가인 지눌의 사상이 조선초·중기에 면면히 전승되어 조선후기 불교를 태동시키는 토대가 되었고, 조선후기 불교는 다시 근현대 한국 불교의 토대가 되었다는 점에서 그 불교사적 의미가 크다고 할 수 있다. 또한 지눌 사상의 전승 양상은 15·16세기 불교정책에 따른 사상 전통의 단절, 임제 법통을 통한 명맥의 유지, 임진왜란 이후의 불교계 부흥 등과 같은 일반적인 인식과는 달리, 조선시대 불교계가 기존의 사상 전통을 능동적으로 계승하면서 이를 토대로 새로운 사상 전통을 창출하고 있었음을 실증하는 사례로서도 그 의미가 크다. 그러므로 법통 중심의 불교사 인식에서 벗어나 사상 전승의 구체적 양상에 대한 연구가 심화됨으로써 조선시대 및 한국 불교사에 대한 이해가 심화될 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Existing research has identified three methods to understand succession and influence of Jinul’s thought. The first method examines human succession relations, the second written content, and the third aspects of publications transmission. The assessment of the succession and influence of Jinul’s thought is different depending on which of these three methods is used. It has been argued that the impact of Jinul’s thought was not great in the Joseon period, because most existing research uses the first method. During the middle of Joseon period the number of Buddhist publications increased rapidly. This enables to study how Buddhist thought changed on the basis of the amount of Buddhist scriptures published. During this period a large amount of publications was issued, which was written or considered as important by Jinul. As a result it is possible to understand the succession of different thoughts related to Jinul’s. In the 16th and 17th century of the Joseon period, the policy for Buddhism was changed and the Buddhist community was re-organised. It can be argued that this re-organization to the character of the late Joseon period actively followed the tradition of the thought of the Koryeo period. This is different from previous research that regards Buddhist thought of Koryeo as discontinued. Through the analysis of the aspect of Buddhist publications and records in the mid-Joseon period, it can be argued that the thought of Jinul, which was the major thought since the mid-Koryeo period, was adapted by Ji-eom in the early 16th century, which was then spreaded by Hyu-jeong and Seon-su in the late 16th century. After the 17th century it was established as the course of I-ryeok by followers of Hyu-jeong and Seon-su and spreaded further. As a result, the thought of Jinul succeeded as a specific Buddhist ideology in the late Jeseon period. This shows that Jinul’s thought from the mid Koryeo continuously spread throughout the Joseon period and became the basis of Buddhism in the late Joseon period. This process is very important for the meaning of modern Buddhism, because the Buddhism from the late Joseon period contributed to establish modern Buddhism.
