국문 초록

본 논문은 팰러닉의 『파이트 클럽』이 함의하는 정치적 의의를 재고하려는 목적을 가진다. 작품과 관련된 대부분의 비평들이 남성적 폭력과 그것이 가지는 해방의 힘에 주목하는 것과 달리, 본 논문은 이 작품이 어떠한 방식으로 육체성을 사회저항의 핵심적 동력으로 삼는지의 문제에서 논의를 시작한다. 소비자본주의가 호출하는 매끈하고 효율적인 육체를 해체하기 위한 목적으로 주인공은 질병이나 오물, 상처로 뒤덮인 남성의 육체를 일종의 대안으로 제시한다. 그러나 문제는 이처럼 사회적 상징질서에 대한 저항의 육체가 궁극적으로 향하는 지점이 바로 그 사회의 근간을 떠받치는 이념이라는 사실이다. 주인공이 형성하는 오욕과 비체의 육체는 거친 개인주의적 남성이라는 전형적인 미국의 이념적 주체를 향한 일종의 도구로 작동하며, 그 결과 작품에서 비정상적 육체를 통해 주인공이 꿈꾸는 해방의 자아는 사회가 호출하는 거세된 남성을 벗어나 남성 본연의 타고난 독립성을 회복하려는 다분히 보수적인 담론 속으로 재포섭된다. 이를 바탕으로, 본 글은 한편으로 비정상의 육체가 기존의 저항담론과는 달리 새로운 저항주체의 맹아를 보여준다는 점에서 높이 평가하지만, 다른 한편으로는 이 급진적 저항의식이 개인주의적 남성주체라는 미국사회의 가장 중심적인 성과 국가 담론을 결국 재확인하는데 그친다는 점을 논의의 중심으로 제시할 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to reevaluate the political implications of Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club. Against the grain of the majority of criticism that usually delves into male violence and its liberating power, this paper shifts gears and explores how the novel provides as its nodal point the construction of corporeal body as a site of political resistance. As a way to resist the male body conformed to the order of consumerist capitalism, the protagonist tries a series of abject and mal-functioned bodies, such as the ones with disease, human waste, bruises and cuts. This newly-constructed body is, however, highly problematic in terms of its political significance. Instead of conveying the power of subversion that the corporeal body promises, the wounded male body rather provides the platform for reconfirming the rugged individual male, which is one of the most stereotyped images in American imagination. By investigating the way that the wounded male body in Fight Club actually functions to reinforce the social order that it initially tried to deconstruct, this paper aims to demonstrate that the subversive power of the text is not as strong as it claims to be, but rather considerably limited.
