국문 초록

‘성사(聖事)란 무엇인가?’라는 물음은 그것이 삶의 궁극적인 의미를 묻는 것과 닿아있는 이유로 성사를 한마디로 정의 하기란 상당히 어렵다. 과연 현대인들에게 있어 성사는 어떤 의미가 있을까? 오늘날 많은 사람들이 관계의 단절이나 소외, 공허함 등을 느끼면서도 자신의 개인적인 삶이 가지는 풍부한 의미를 천천히 돌아볼 기회조차 갖지 못할 뿐만 아니라, 공동체나 사회 안에서 그러한 체험을 정당하게 해석할 기회조차 상실한 채 살아가고 있다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 버나드 쿠크(Bernard J. Cooke)는 성사 신학자로서 이 시대 사람들의 언어로 그리스도인들의 삶이 지니는 ‘성사성(聖事性)’의 특별한 가치를 밝히고자 한다. 그는 종교적 예식에서마저 그저 습관적으로 답습하는 모든 행위들에 대하여 그것의 실존적 의미를 거듭해서 묻는다. 사실 성사는 우리에게 ‘비가시적’ 하느님 은총의 ‘가시적’ 표징으로서 인간의 현실이나 내면 깊은 곳으로부터 변화의 힘을 지속적으로 부여하는 신적 활동이면서 동시에 인간적 활동이다. 그에게 있어서 성사는 가장 인간적인 일로서 현실의 인간에게 “신적인 구원행위가 우리의 인격적 성장을 가능하게 한다”는 메시지로서 전달되며 구원이라는 한 가지 희망을 불러일으킨다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그리고 그의 논지는 마땅히 향유되어야 하나 의미를 상실하거나 퇴색해 버린 ‘사랑’이나 ‘우정’의 관계성 회복에 보다 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 이 말은 곧 우리가 참으로 성사를 체험하였다고 한다면 새로운 삶으로 살아갈 것을 동시에 초대받은 것임을 상기시킨다.

영문 초록

“What is the Sacraments?” That question is quite difficult for us to answer in a word because it is related to the question of the ultimate meaning of life. So asking ‘What is the meaning of Sacraments for moderns?’ is indeed worthy. Many people feel today severance of relations or alienation, and the sense of emptiness, not having a chance to explore their own personal wealth of meaning of life tranquilly, as well as within the community or society they can live also losing a chance to interpret duly those experiences. Based on these issues, Bernard J. Cooke as the Sacrament theologian tried to enlighten for us about the special values of the Christians’ Sacramental life which is containing Sacramentality. He asks again and again of its existential meaning for all our activities like celebration that is performed habitually even in religious ceremonies. In fact, the Sacraments are visible symbols as we can experience, and also invisible God’s grace whose activities continue to give us the power of divinity in the human real life. Therefore the reality of the Sacrament leads us to be humans, helping us to find the meaning of the most humane work. So the sentence of "the divine saving act enables our personal growth." is significant thing for us because it carries a message of hope and evokes one salvation. At the last his argument focuses on the restoration of relationships because ‘love’ and ‘friendship’ look like fading away today. He wanted to remind us that we are all invited to live renewed lives through the experience of the Sacrament.
