국문 초록

인터넷 및 모바일 어플리케이션 등 다양한 건강 정보 채널의 등장을 기점으로 개인이 건강 정보를 얻기 위해 이용하는 채널들에 관한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 개인의 인구통계학 및 건강관련 변인들이 개인의 채널 선택에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지에 대한 연구가 부족한 실정이며, 특히 개인이 하나의 정보 채널이 아닌 다양한 채널들의 건강정보를 어떻게 융합 및 활용하는 가에 대한 연구에 대한 필요가 제기되어지고 있다. 본 연구는 미국의 국가적 차원에서 지속적으로 진행되어온 건강 정보이용현황 연구(Health Information National Trends Survey) 자료를 바탕으로, 미국 국민들이 건강 정보를 얻기 위해 이용하는 핵심 채널들과 개개인의 인구통계 및 건강 관련 변인들이 건강 정보 채널 선택에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 밝히고자 하였다. 5,626 명의 미국거주 성인남녀를 대상으로 실시한 2007 년 자료분석 결과, 대부분의 미국 성인들은 하나 이상의 채널을 복합적으로 이용하며, 인쇄 매체와 의사 등의 전문가가 가장 빈번히 이용되어지는 건강 정보 채널인 것으로 나타났다. 인구 통계학적 변인과 관련해서 미국 국민들 개개인 내에서도 교육수준에 따른 정보이용의 격차가 나타난 바, 이는 과거부터 현재까지 지속적으로 재기되는 문제점에 인터넷이 기여하지 못하고 있음을 반영하는 결과이다.

영문 초록

A wealth of studies has identified determinants of individuals’ channel selection for health information with recent focus centering on the Internet. However, few studies have examined the characteristics of individuals who consult multiple channels rather than relying on a single channel to acquire health information. This study replicates, updates, and advances the existing knowledge on audience characteristics that are associated with channel selection for health information. An analysis of 5,626 adult data drawn from the 2007 Health Information National Trends Survey indicates distinctive characteristics of the audiences who select a particular channel over others as their primary health information channel. A majority of individuals used multiple channels, and print media and healthcare providers were the most frequently sought supplementary channels. A lingering issue on information gaps, particularly in terms of education, does deserve attention. The implications for strategic channel selections for effective health communication campaigns are discussed.
