율곡(栗谷)과 퇴계(退溪)의 ‘흥(興)’ 공간에 대한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선시대 성리학을 대표하는 율곡과 퇴계의 작품에 표현된 ‘흥’과 그 공간을 탐구한 것이다. 작품에서 고산 구곡과 도산이라는 공간은 강학을 위해 서원을 세운 곳으로, 세상과 구별되는 장소이자 그들의 마음과 정신이 자연과 하나가 되는 공간이다. 즉 그들은 이러한 공간에서 눈앞에 펼쳐진 자연과 더불어 학문에 매진하며 정신적 자유의 상태를 경험하였다. 이를 테면 율곡의「 高山九曲歌 」(고산구곡가)는 해주 석담의 자연경관을 ‘구곡’으로 나누어 그곳에서의 삶을 노래한 작품이다. 고산 구곡의 아름다움과 그 안에서 느끼는 즐거움은 몸과 정신의 수양이 깊어지는 것을 의미한다. 또한 「陶山二十六詠」(도산이십육영)은 퇴계가 만년에 도산(陶山)을 경영 하면서 자신이 거주하는 공간을 읊은 시로, 자연의 이치를 깨닫고 그 이치를 통해 자연을 즐기는 모습이 담겨져 있다. 이렇듯 율곡과 퇴계의 작품에는 자연과의 일체감 에서 생성된 즐거움인 ‘흥(興)’이 표현되어 있다.

영문 초록

This study explored the meanings and spaces of 'Xing(a sort of delight)' expressed in the works of Yulgok and Toegye, who were representative Neo‐Confucian scholars in the Joseon Dynasty. In their works, Gosangugok and Dosan were spaces not disconnected from the world but still distinguished from it, and they were 'Xing' spaces where mind and spirit become one with nature. In other words, they were not unrealistic ideational spaces but places where people experienced the state of mental freedom before nature open in front of them. Yulgok’s Gosangugokga is a poem that divided the natural scenery of Seokdam in Haeju into ‘Gugok (Five River Bends)’ and recited the life in the place. The beauty of Gosangugok and the joy of life in the beauty mean the profound cultivation of body and mind. Dosanisipyukyeong is a poem that Toegye composed on the space where he stayed while running the School of Dosan in his later years. This poem describes the poet’s realization of natural laws and his enjoyment of nature through the laws.
