영문 초록

This article aims to help you to understand and accept Alf Laylah wa Laylah as popular literature through the analysis of the elements of popular literature in Alf Laylah wa Laylah by focusing on “The Story of the Porter and the Ladies”. For this, this article examines sexual love and magic within the Arabic text. Description of sexual love arouses human instinct, and magic arouses interest through its ability to produce something supernatural; such arousals are indeed very close to the quintessence of popular literature. The article will specifically look at “The Story of the Porter and the Ladies” because it is rich with characteristics of popular literature. Through analysis of sexual love and magic in the Story, the article confirms the effectiveness of the two components as elements of popular literature. Anecdotes of sexual love analyzed in this article range from the three ladies’ flirtations and the porter, and the affair of the woman who opened the door, to the story of incest as told by the first mendicant. Anecdotes of magic include the transformation of landlady’s two sisters to black dogs, transformation of the second mendicant to a monkey, and the confrontation between the princess and the jinn. Thorough analyses of these anecdotes reveal that sexual love and magic arouse interest and therefore act as elements that attract the public readership.
