영문 초록

In modern times, Muslims have attempted to provide scientific evidence that pork is a harmful diet. It is well-known that according to the Qurʾān, pig is ḥarām. No punishment for the consumption of pig is, however, found in the Qurʾān. Why did, then, the Qurʾān stipulate pig as ḥarām? What were the perspectives of the Sunnah and the four Islamic legal schools on the consumption of pig, and what punishment was fixed for violation of prohibition? Having examined the Qurʾān, Ḥadīth, and the fatwās of the four Islamic legal schools(Ḥanafī, Malikī, Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī) and the modern jurists of the Arabo-Islamic world, I found out that the only reason for the prohibition of the consumption of pig is because pig is filthy, and that no punishment for violation of prohibition is found. It can be safely said that by obeying the prohibition on the consumption of pig, Muslims enforce their religious identity, quite distinct from people of other religions.
