The object of this Study is to establish the theoretical frame for general policy and marketing strategy for duty free shop, in order to propose the general direction of duty free shop policy that needs to be implemented, of which purpose is to secure the competitive edge in international duty free shop business, to enhance the image of Korea, and finally to maximize the economic benifit and profit.
To achieve this, the working of duty free shop business have been closely examined, and reconfirmed the current situation of duty free shop business. In order to make the duty free shop business play a bigger role in helping of the Korean economy by securing the competitive edge against foreign counterparts, following measures are needed to be taken.
First of all, starting from extensive study on consumer behavior of foreign tourists, all of marketing of the products foreigner's preference, development of new products, and implementation of merchandizing policy adapted to customer's demands, are required.
Secondly, the development of various souvenirs that has strong appeal to the customers are required, including the character products of Korea itself, while breaking away from the currently heavy dependence on sales of groceries.
Thirdly, quality and distinctiveness of Korean products need to be upgraded, which will lead to decreased sales of imports and increased sales of Korean products abroad.
Fourthly, price competitiveness needs to be raised, which is possible by reduction of material cost, holding of various promotional events, improvement in product distribution system, and implementation of rational management policy, etc.
Fifithly, the advertisement and public image making in foreign countries need to be aggressively srengthened and pursued, and quality and distinctiveness of duty free shop products need to be upgraded and controlled to raise and maintain competitiveness.
