1920년대 <불교>지에 나타난 불교유학생의 문학 활동

국문 초록

본고는 1920년대 불교잡지에 형성된 文學場의 주체에 대한 탐구의 일환으로, <불교>지를 중심으로 활발하게 투고활동을 한 신진 유학생 그룹의 문학 활동 양상을 고찰하였다. 유학생 가운데 학술적으로나 시사적인 분야에서 활발한 투고로 불교지의 기획에 동참하면서 문학행위를 한 인물로는 3.1운동 후 중국으로 망명성 유학을 떠난 白性郁(1897-1981), 일본유학생인 金泰洽(1899∼1989)과 李英宰(1900-1927)가 대표적이다. 백성욱의 「평수잡조(萍水雜俎)」(제15-30호, 1925.9-1926.12)의 시와 산문은 시대의 아픔을 반영하면서도 미의 본질을 추구하는, 철학적 깊이가 있는 글쓰기를 보여주고 있다. 이영재의 「도석기(渡錫記)」(제23~27호, 1926.5-1926.9)는 동 시대 지어진 여행기 가운데서도 해양실크로드를 따라 스리랑카에 도달한 최초의 여행기로 평가할 수 있다. 김태흡의 시는 현실적 어려움 속에서 고군분투하는 유학생들의 현실을 반영하면서 종교적 심성으로 자신을 정화하는 종교성을 지니고 있다. 또한 국내 전도 강연의 과정에서 「남북선순강인상기(南北鮮巡講印象記)」(제17-18호, 1925.11-12), 「삼방약수포전도행(三防藥水浦傳道行)」(제64-65호, 1929.10-11) 등을 지었으며, 호남의 유명 사찰을 답사하여 「남유구도예찬(南遊求道禮讚)」(제63-65호, 1929.9-11)을 게재함으로써, 불교소식란에 전해지지 않는 수도 도량의 생생한 내면을 현장감 있게 소개하였다. 이들은 박한영, 권상로와 편지를 주고받으며 투고활동을 하는 등 밀접한 관계를 유지하였다. 이들 신세대 유학생들은 아마도 정신적인 지주로서 박한영을, <불교>지의 실무적인 편집인으로서 권상로와 밀접한 교류를 나눈 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 종적 네트워크와 동일 세대 간의 횡적 네트워크 하에서 이들은 기사를 작성하고, 여행기를 투고하고, 창작 시를 투고한 것이다. 결국 1920년대 근대 불교 문학장은 1910년 이래 박한영이 중심이 되어 구축한 불교지성-국학인프라가 배경이 되고, 권상로와 그의 대승사ㆍ김용사 인맥(최취허, 안진호)이 중심 주체가 되며, 이들 두 세대의 영향 하에 후속 유학생 그룹이 전위에 서는 양상을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper consider the literature activities of new generation of internation students who actively submit articles in 『Bulgyo』 magazine to figure out the main agent of literature field in Buddhist magazine in 1920's. Among the internation students who actively submit academic papers or suggestive essays to participate 『Bulgyo』 magazine's scheme, we can represent Baek, Sung Wook(1897-1981) who was exiled and studied in China after the March First Independence Movement, Kim, Tae Heub(1899-1989) and Lee, Young Jae(1900-1927) who were studied in Japan. The poetry and prose in Pyeong Soo Jab Jo, written by Baek, Sung Wook, shows the essence of beauty with sorrow of the ages and the philosopical thought as well. Compared with contemparary travel journals, Lee, Young Jae's travel essay was the first travel essay reached Sri Lanka through the Ocean Silk Road. In case of Kim, Tae Heub, his poetry shows the struggle life of international students in those days and purified himself with religion, and he wrote explore journal through the domestic mission work lecture. Also he introduce fresh experience of practice ascerticism for the famous temples in Honam district by article in the Buddhist magazine. Those three international students are also students of Park, Han Young, they keep in touch each other through letter, and having deep relation with Kwon, Sang Ro as well. I believe they may treat Park, Han Young as the anchor and Kwon, Sang Ro as the operational person in charge of editor in Buddhist magazine. They submit their articles, travel journals, poem under those relationship. If we look through this relation, the background of the modern Buddhist literature field will be the network between Buddhist scholar and Korean classical scholar established by the Park, Han Young in 1910's, and the base of development of literature field in Buddhist magazine will be the Kwon, Sang Ro and his network of Dae Seung-Sa and Kim Young-Sa. The succeding generation which is rised by the international students will revolve around the generation of Park, Han Young and Kwon, Sang Ro.
