폴 리쾨르는 『기억, 역사, 망각』을 3부로 나누어 다룬 뒤, 이 과거 시간이 드러낸 '경험'의 총체적 삶 가운데 드러난 인간성을 한마디로 '용서할 수 없음'이라 요약한다. 그러면서도 에필로그에서 '어려운 용서'라는 주제를 설정하면서 그는 용서의 수수께끼를 이중적으로 표현한다. 한편, 유한하지만 '능력 있는 인간(l'homme capable)'의 행동할 수 있는 힘(puissance)을 마비시키는 잘못(faute)과 관계되며, 다른 한편, 그 잘못의 응답으로서 실존불가능성(incapacité)에서 들어올릴 수 있는 가능성과도 관계된다. 리쾨르는 잘못과 용서 사이의 불균형을 수직적 불일치라고 비유적으로 언급하면서도, 이 두 담론행위 사이에 용서의 평형방정식을 연다. 이 용서의 궤도는 복잡한 인간문화가 형성된 과정을 거치면서, 마침내 인간주체의 자기성(ipséité)에서 여러 층으로 나타난다. 용서의 요구와 용서의 제공 사이 수평적 관계와 수직적 관계의 비대칭은 어떻게 밝혀질까? 그 해명의 시도에서 자기성의 주체는 시간의 흐름의 주인이 될 수도 있는 실현가능성을 새롭게 끌어낸다. 이 용서의 역설은 아브라함의 전통 안에서 발견된 회개(répentance)의 변증법에 의해 다듬어진 역설이다. 인간적 시간체험인 '기억, 역사, 망각'에서 그 전체의 통과과정을 용서정신의 빛으로 총괄하는 이 시도는 종말론적인 '바램의 희구법(optatif)'에서이다. 따라서 고백과 찬미의 변증법은 증명의 논리가 아닌 은총의 바람으로 실천적 삶 속에서 소통의 수수께끼인 실천적 지혜에 속한다.

영문 초록

Forgiveness proposes a question distinct from the question motivating to the representation of the past on the plane of memory, history and forgetting. The trajectory of forgiveness has its origin in the disproportion between the poles of fault and forgiveness: below, the avowal of fault; above, the hymn to forgiveness. The first brings to the language an experience of the same order as those 'givens of experience' and as those 'boundary situations', upon which reflective thinking is grafted. Here, agents bind themselves to their action and recognize themselves as accountable. The second can be heard in the sapiential poetry that celebrates love and joy. This voice says that there is forgiveness. Ricoeur takes note of a remarkable relation which places the request for forgiveness and the offering of forgiveness on a plane of equality and reciprocity, as if there existed a relation of exchange between these two speech acts. The exploration of this track is encouraged by the kinship found in numerous languages between forgiving and giving. In the thesis of Ricoeur, a significant asymmetry exists between being able to forgive and being able to promise. Thus, at the heart of selfhood and at the core of imputability, the paradox of forgiveness is laid bare by the dialectic of repentance in the Abrahamic tradition. There remains the attempt to recapitulate the entire course traveled in Memory, History, Forgetting in light of the spirit of forgiveness, with the eschatological projection, formulated in the optative mood.
