국문 초록

본 논문은 선군시대 중대급 이하의 군인들에게 형성되어 있는 병영문화(barracks culture) 연구를 통하여 북한군을 좀 더 심층적으로 이해하고, 북한군 병영문화의 특징을 도출하여 정신전력에 미치는 영향을 분석하는데 있다. 국내ㆍ외에 북한군 병영문화에 대한 연구가 전혀 없으며, 한국군 병영문화에 대한 학술적 연구도 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 '북한군 병영문화'에 대한 조작적 정의를 하고, '분석틀'을 설계하여 연구를 진행하였다. '조선인민군'의 역할 및 전통, 병영환경을 병영문화의 배경으로 살펴보고, 선군시대의 병영생활(barracks life) 실상을 통하여 병영문화의 특징을 도출하였다. 선군시대 중대급 이하 군인들의 가치문화 특징은 '수령결사옹위의 정신으로 무장하고, 조국과 인민을 보위하는 군사복무를 영예롭게 여기는 문화'라고 할 수 있다. 규범문화는 '강철같은 규율준수를 추구하는 가운데 기강해이 현상이 잔존하는 문화'이며, 병영생활문화는 '열악한 물질생활 여건 속에서도 능동적으로 복무하는 분대장 중심의 동지적 문화'라는 특징을 나타내고 있다. 이러한 병영문화가 북한군 정신전력에 미치는 영향은 일부는 긍정적으로, 일부는 부정적인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 북한군의 강ㆍ약점 분석과 전투력 평가에 대한 객관성을 높이는 근거자료가 된다는 점에서 매우 유의미하다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study tries to analyze the "barracks culture" of the Korean People's Army (KPA), which is formed among soldiers below the company/squadron level, and the influence on esprit de corps. No study has been conducted on barracks culture in the KPA -- and for that matter, few studies exist on barracks culture of the South Korean armed forces. Therefore, I define barracks culture operationally, i.e., specific culture formed among soldiers below the company/squadron level, so as to examine the KPA's barracks culture within a framework of analysis. This study considers the KPA's role, tradition, and environment of the barracks as the background factors of its barracks culture and with these factors, the features of burracks culture were deduced In the Songun era, soldiers are to be armed with the value/spirit of protecting the Suryong and to serve honorably by standing at their guard posts, protecting the fatherland and the people. The cultural norm is to stedfastly observe discipline, though lax discipline is apparent. Consequently, cultured ways of barracks life are to do one's service positively despite the spartan life and unite behind the squad leader. The effects of barracks culture which affect KPA's esprirt de corps was regarded as positive one and also negative one partially
