경찰다이버전 단계에서의 소년비행과 자존감과의 관계

국문 초록

자존감은 소년비행을 유발하는 중요한 관련 요인으로 다루어지나, 청소년들의 비행이 자존감과 어떠한 관계를 갖고 있는지에 대해서는 아직까지 그 인과관계가 명확히 밝혀지지 않았다. 형사사법절차를 경험한 청소년들이 국가와의 공식적ㆍ비공식적 접촉 과정에서 부정적인 영향을 받아 자존감이 훼손된다고 보는 전통적인 낙인이론이 있는 반면, 최근 범죄학에서는 범죄를 많이 저지르는 청소년들이 자신의 자존감을 오히려 확대하여 과장해석하고 자기 방a어기제에 의해 자존감을 상승시킨다는 자아강화이론이 제기되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 기본적으로 비행 및 범죄로 인해 경찰단계에 들어온 청소년들의 자존감의 정도를 실증적으로 조사하고, 이들의 비행 및 전과경험이 자존감에 실질적으로 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하는데 궁극적인 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 2010년 11월 한 달 동안 경찰다이버전 프로그램에 참가했던 비행청소년 115명을 대상으로 자기보고식 비행조사와 자존감조사를 실시하였으며, 수집 자료를 SPSS 통계패키지 프로그램을 통해 빈도분석, 상관관계분석, 다중회귀분석을 실시했다. 분석 결과, 자기비행보고 점수가 높은 청소년들은 자존감이 낮게 나타난 반면, 소년원 전과를 가지고 있는 청소년들은 높은 자존감 점수를 보였다. 기존의 "범죄-자존감" 논쟁이 일부 어느 정도 우리나라에서도 설명력을 갖고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 결과를 토대로, 경찰다이버전 단계의 소년들이 이전의 소년원 수감 등과 같은 전과 경력이 있다면 이를 경찰 처우단계에서 세심하게 살펴 경찰 다이버전 자체가 소년의 자아감 형성에 부정적 영향을 미치지 않도록 개별화된 개입준비를 해야 할 필요성이 확인되었다. 사회적 냉대와 공식 구금 경험으로 자기방어 기제의 한 형태로 소년의 자존감이 왜곡되어 상승된 것이라면, 다이버전 단계에서 자존감에 영향을 줄 수 있는 개별화된 처우를 실시해야 하고, 소년경찰의 효과성을 높이기 위해 왜곡된 자존감을 바로잡을 수 있는 전문화된 소년 다이버전 프로그램을 개발할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims at exploring self-esteem issues in terms of juvenile delinquency, prior experience of youth detention center, and individual demographic factors of juveniles in South Korea. Traditionally there are numerous studies on the association between crime and low self-esteem. However, recent studies and controversial views began to offer new version of correlation regarding crime and high self-esteem. Youth offenders who commit crimes can be described as expressing desirable image about themselves with their high self-esteem in order to avoid negatively labelled self-image from others. The fact that they were incarcerated in the youth detention center might result in strong defensive self-esteem mechanism for some juvenile delinquents consciously or unconsciously. The present study conducted self-administered survey toward 115 juvenile delinquents who had participated in police diversion programs in South Korea from November, 2010. The survey was designed to estimate basic demographic characteristics, prior crime history, self-esteem concepts and juvenile delinquency. A correlation analysis and multivariate regression model were used to assess the impact of juvenile delinquency on the self-esteem level for 115 delinquents who participated in six different police diversion programs. Results showed that there is statistically significant correlation between juvenile delinquency and low self-esteem. Furthermore, the multivariate regression model supported the relationship between prior youth detention experience and high self-esteem, which is consistent with the recent concept of "problematic defensive self-esteem." In addition, the model showed that age and type of family structure are statistically significant factors that can affect the level of self-esteem. Further policy implication will be discussed in term of policing diversion strategy for juveniles.
