A Test of a Revised Classic Strain Theory among South Korean Adolescents

국문 초록

본 연구는 애그뉴(Robert Agnew)와 그의 동료들이 1996년도에 수행한 연구를 한국적 맥락에 적용해본다는 차원에서 한국의 고등학생들을 대상으로 머튼(Thomas Merton, 1938)의 고전긴장이론(classic strain theory)을 검증해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국청소년패널연구의 4, 5차 자료를 이용하여 심하게 편포된 가산 종속변수들에 적합한 음이항회귀모형을 구축하였다. 분석 결과 고전긴장이론은 일부 지지를 받는 것으로 드러났다. 긴장을 직업적 열망과 기대 간의 불일치에서 오는 것으로 측정했을 경우 일탈과의 상관관계가 없었다. 반면, 긴장을 현재의 경제적 상황에 대한 불만족과 절망으로 측정했을 경우에는 실리적 일탈(강도와 절도, 원조교제)과 약물 남용(흡연과 음주)을 증가시키는 것으로 드러났다. 이러한 결과들은 애그뉴 외(1996)의 연구와 일치하는 결론을 도출하였다. 교육이 매우 중시되는 한국의 독특한 문화적 환경을 고려하여 학습에서 오는 긴장이 청소년 일탈에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 예상과 달리 일탈을 감소시키는 것으로 드러났다.

영문 초록

Replicating Agnew and his colleagues' (1996) study in South Korean contexts, this study explored the applicability of Merton's (1938) classic strain theory to a nationally representative sample of South Korean high school students. Using two waves of a longitudinal study data, Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS), this study constructed a negative binomial regression model to deal with the highly skewed dependent variables. The results showed mixed support for the theory. Measured in terms of the discrepancy between occupational aspirations and expectations, strain showed no relationship with delinquency. When strain was directly measured in terms of dissatisfaction and frustration with immediate financial conditions, monetary strain positively predicted both utilitarian delinquency (a composite measure of robbery, larceny, and prostitution) and substance abuse (a composite measure of smoking and drinking). Those results arrived at the same conclusions as Agnew et al.'s. Given the unique cultural context of South Korea, where education takes on inordinate importance, educational strain was also taken into consideration. However, findings indicatedthat educational strain decreases, rather than increases, delinquency.
