중학교 학부모들의 학부모회 참여 동기와 의미 및 그 맥락에 대한 탐색

국문 초록

이 연구는 서울 Y중학교 학부모들의 학부모회 참여 동기와 의미 및 그 맥락에 대해 질적접근에 기초하여 살펴보았다. 학부모들의 참여 동기와 의미는 세 가지 차원, 자녀교육적, 학교교육적, 개인적 차원으로 구분된다. 자녀교육적 차원에서, 학부모들은 자녀와 자녀의 학교생활을 이해하고 자녀와 공감대를 형성하기 위해 학부모회에 참여하였다. 또 순찰활동을 통해 자녀가 학교폭력이나 사건, 사고에 연루되는 것을 막고자 하였으며, 다른 학부모들과 진학과 진로, 사교육에 대한 정보를 교환하고자 하였다. 아울러 학부모회 활동을 하면서 학교내 사정과 교사의 고충에 대해 이해해가고 있었으며 학교와 교사를 친근하게 느끼고 있었다. 학교교육적 차원에서 학부모들은 자신들의 활동을 통해 학교교육을 보완하고자 하였다. 또 학부모회를 통해 학교 측에 자신들의 교육적 요구를 적극적으로 피력하고 있었으며, 자신들의 교육적 요구가 반영된 프로그램을 직접 창출하고 있었다. 아울러 학부모회 활동이 공동체 자원을 재활용과 학교 공동체의 강화에 기여할 수 있다는 점을 높이 평가하고 있었다. 끝으로 개인적 차원에서 학부모들은 다른 학부모들과 친목을 도모하고 공동체를 형성할 수 있다는 점에서 학부모회 활동에 의미를 부여하고 있었으며, 사회생활과 자기계발을 실현하는 것은 물론, 스트레스 해소, 성취감과 보람, 책임감과 자부심을 경험하고 있었다. 이상의 동기와 의미들은 시간적, 경제적 여유를 기초로 한 고학력 중산층 학부모라는 특정한 사회경제적, 문화적 맥락을 기초로 하고 있었다.

영문 초록

The study as a qualitative case-study examined motivation, meanings, and contexts of participation in a schools' parents association at a middle school in Seoul. The benefit of participating in schools parent association can be considered in three aspects: Children's education, school education, and psycho-individual. In children's education, there found interesting parents'motivation and meanings of their participation in schools' parents association. The parents tried to understand their children and to form a consensus through participating in parents' association's activities. They not only wanted to prevent their children from getting involved in school bullying or adolescence delinquencies, but also to exchange information of high schools, colleges, career courses, or private education. In addition, they had come to understand the positions of the school and difficulties of teachers' In school-educational view, parents tried to complement schooling through their activities, created new programs reflecting their own educational needs, and strongly appealed for their educational demand to improve extra-curriculum or after-school-program. Furthermore, parents found meanings for the participation in that they could contribute to save school-resources by recycling school-uniforms and promote communal spirit. In psycho-individual view, parents wanted to have opportunities to meet other parents and unite a parents-community, to assure themselves as some social beings, and extend social networks through which enable them to develop themselves and reduce stresses of everyday life. Moreover, they experienced a sense of accomplishment, fruitfulness, or self-esteem, which made them participate in school's parents association consistently. Parents tried to make their children as a winner of college entrance exam by helping them to make "specs" through their activities of school parents' association. Also, they were belonged to a wealthy, well-educated group in Kangnam area who could invest time and money for the activities of parents' association. Besides, they had open mindedness and showed cooperative attitude for school's parents association and its activities with high fervor for children's education. The parents' association of the middle school was a big one having many members in it, which made it possible for parent not to feel burden to participate in the activities of parents' association.
