영문 초록

Conversation learning and language learning are separate aspects of communicative competence but they need to be taught coincidingly. However, most Korean English teachers focus primarily on language learning and then simply ignore the rest. Their students are provided with minimal communicative chances and are neglected in conversation learning. This study suggests heightened language awareness in order to overcome the stated problems of college level English in Korea. In this procedure, a student starts the conversation first and then learns some pieces of language which are relevant to the conversation involved. Movie scripts are used in these conversation practices and in language learning. This is because movies are fun for the students and fairly authentic in language. Two experiments proceeded. One is a big scale experiment and the other is a case study. Through the two experiments, it was examined whether language awareness is stimulated by having conversations or whether language awareness plays a role in keeping language learning effective. It was also found that students were more positive speaking in a conversation before learning the basics of a language. The results are satisfactory. The students are content first with their communicative ability and language ability developed afterward.
