영문 초록

Despite the importance given to listening in foreign language acquisition, many college students in Korea seem not to have confidence enough to adequately understand authentic English language materials through TV programs, movies, and so forth, and to know what the native speakers are talking about. It might be because they do not understand several language components involved in listening comprehension, such as phonological (reductions, elisions, contractions, etc.), syntactic, and lexical elements, and non-linguistic conversation elements (gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, body language, the rate of delivery, etc.) within cultural and situational contexts. Since these elements are inter-related, a movie-based curriculum which can address all of these elements will be desirable to aid listening comprehension. What kind of teaching method is, then, effective for our students? The purpose of this paper is to present a self-directed English immersion method using teacher-prepared worksheet in order to effectively improve our students' listening comprehension. This paper describes the process of implementing of the method in a movie-based course. Furthermore, this paper explores the results of student surveys to aid us in our ongoing evaluation of the movie-based course. Finally, some recommendations are provided for EFL educators and researchers.
