영문 초록

While there are various indices concerning health, as yet no one index expressing in figures the elderly level of health has been evoled. The purpose of this study was to review the health of the elderly with health indices : mortality rate and average life expectancy at the older adult, the conditions of diseases and injuries, and activities of daily living. The health status of the elderly is clearly lower than those of other segments of the population. With the improvement in the death rate, life expectancy has increased so that the elderly can expect to live longer. But, the sickness rate increase in the aging of the population. There has been a marked increase in neoplasmas and cardiovascular disease such ashypertension,cerebral apoplexy and heart diseases in the elderly. Moreover, there has been a considerable increare in the case of mental disorder. In terms of activities of daily living, the study revealed that the great majority of the elderly were able to carry on the basic activities of daily living. In particular, physical activities of daily living were not prevalent problems. The results indicated that instrumental acticities of daily living were the more frequently encountered problems. Rapid change of population of Korea in this centry predicts the expansion of aging trend. It is precisely this group which places the greatest demand on health and social services. For the health services for the elderly to be realised, a comprehensive and integreted policy is needed.
