영문 초록

Not yet confronted with a "crisis of the old age," or problems of the ageing society, and despite relatively high homage to Confucianist value of filial piety and its practice both of which are shown by various statistical reports, readers and audiences of Korea have been bombarded with various warning messages on mass media about issues of the aged in recent years. Does this consideration for the elderly tell that Korea is and will be quite advanced in terms of social provision for the elderly, compared to other older and economically more developed societies? This question is the point of departure of this paper. First part shows the current social organizations of the aged in Korea. Second part of this paper critically analyzes the socially constructed reality of the aged, only to find that the burden of ageing society in Korea has fallen upon women. An argument is made how, why and by whom women become the scapegoat, incorporating a political economy and a feminist approach. Detailed account of each issue raised here has to follow with a theoretical rigor and data. This commentary is attempted to show a prototype of structural analysis of the issues related to the aged from a critical standpoint.
