기생을 바라보는 근대의 시선

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 근대 초기 기생의 지위와 기생조직의 변화를 신문매체에 나타난 기생 관련 담론을 통해 살피는 것이다. 기생은 전통적으로 신분제의 최하층에 위치한 천민 여성집단이었지만, 이들의 존재방식은 철저히 지배담론과 정책에 의해 조율되어 왔다. 따라서 기생을 바라보는 외부의 시선 속에는 당대 지배담론의 동향, 지배권력의 이동이 개입되게 마련이다. 근대 초기는 '신민에서 국민으로' 대대적인 정체성 전환이 요구되는 시기였다. 기생은 전대로부터 상속받은 모순과 질곡을 고스란히 지닌 채, 국가전례에 여전히 그들의 才藝를 제공하는 동시에 공적 사회와도 낯선 형태로 대면해야 했다. 이 연구에서는 '음녀' 혹은 '娼流'라는 낙인이 찍혀있었던 기생을 둘러싼 新ㆍ舊 논리의 착종을 살피고, 기생이 양자로부터 어떻게 소외되는지를 살펴보았다. 근대 초기 신문매체에서는 기생을 舊惡과 미개를 상징하는 존재, 화류병을 가진 잠재적 보균자로 취급하였다. 관기제를 청산되어야 할 폐습으로 본 근대 언론은 관기제의 실질을 구성하던 기생 역시 야만의 존재로 명명했던 것이다. 따라서 기생은 계몽언론이 상상하던 '국민'의 대열에서도 원천적으로 소외되어 왔다. 그러나 국가의 운명이 날로 쇠미해지면서 기생의 공적 기여에 대한 지식인들의 시각이 달라지기 시작하였다. 일제의 침략의도가 점차 노골화되고, 최후의 일인까지 '국민'으로 전환하려는 계몽언론의 위기의식이 극에 달했을 때, 비록 소수에 불과하지만 일부의 기생은 '국민'이라는 근대적 주체로 호명될 수 있었다. 기생의 국민화는 이렇듯 강고한 편견과 지위의 열악함을 뚫고 기생집단이 어떻게 사회적 승인을 위해 분투해왔는지를 보여준다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this research is to inquire into the status of Kisaeng and the changement of Kisaeng system through analyzing the discourses of Kisaeng shown in the newspapers in the early modern period. Even though the Kisaeng were known as the lowest class of people, they were coordinated by the governance. As a consequence the overview toward Kisaeng includes the trend of ideology or the movement of authority. This paper focuses the Kisaeng of the early modern period when the logic of old and new were entangled and how the enlightenment journalists excluded the Kisaeng from the civilization process. Among the tone of the press in the early modern period, the view toward the Kisaeng which regarded them as the target of symbolizing the old evil or venereal carrier was found frequently. The intellectuals who leaded the newspapers spotted the Kisaeng for the vulgarity and excluded them from the members of modern nation. But facing with the nation crisis the view of intellectuals toward Kisaeng started to be changed. As the Japanese imperialists's intention of invading Korea emerged into the surface, the enlightenment intellectuals used the Kisaeng to propagandize the nation by encouraging their devotion to the publicness. The nationalization of Kisaeng shows evidently how they have been struggling against the prejudice to get the social approval.
