장기 요양 시설에 거주하는 사람들은 함께 살게되는 룸메이트와 새롭고 의미있는 관계를 형성해 가며 그들의 노년기를 보내게 된다. 그러다가 한 룸메이트가 사망했을 때 남아있는 룸메이트는 이별의 슬픔과 자신의 삶의 유한성, 죽음에 대한 두려움을 경험하게 된다. 하지만 이들의 상실감과 두려움은 노인들은 상실과 죽음에 면역이 되어 있을 것이라는 속단과 가족이 아니라는 사실 등으로 쉽게 간과되고 있다. 본 논문은 필자의 사역일지 속의 사례들을 포함하고 있으며 노년기에 있어서 친구의 의미와 노년기에 겪는 상실의 특수성, 또한 상실에 대한 목회 신학적 측면을 논하고 있다. 노년기 애도자들을 위한 목회상담적 접근으로서 공감과 경청(Ministry of Presence and Empathic Listening)의 중요성, 비 정상적인 상실과 애도의 과정에 대한 감지 및 개개인의 특수상황 진단, 상실 속에서도 새로운 관계와 삶의 의미를 찾아 갈 수 있도록 인도하는 것 등을 포함하고 있다. 죽음의 두려움과 상실의 아픔을 치유하는 예식(Rituals)과 말씀(Scriptures)의 중요성을 역설하고 도움이 될 성경구절들을 추천함으로써 가족과도 같았던 룸메이트를 잃고 애도하고 있는 노인에 대한 목회적 돌봄의 필요성과 목회 상담의 실천적 요소들을 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

People form new and even meaningful relationships with other residents and particularly their roommates once they move into long-term care facilities. As recounts of responses to nursing home roommates reveal, when a resident dies, the other residents struggle with grief that is mixed with fear of separation and fear of their own mortality. Amid the preparations following the death, however, the grief of these new friends is overlooked. This paper argues the theological importance of recognizing these forgotten grievers and of providing pastoral care through their grieving process and discusses the implications on the assessment process and pastoral care in long-term care facilities. In order to explore this unrecognized grief, this article includes vignettes from the field journal of the author. It deals with the significance of friendship and kinship for the elderly and the grief they face when they lose their friends and roommates. It discusses the importance of accurate assessment, tips for grief counseling, and meaning making toward the ultimate goal, peace of God. The way to help the grief process will be dealt under the topic of rituals that are the Word of God and worship.
