사회적 연결망과 은퇴 경험이 한국 중고령자의 건강에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

이 연구는 사회적 연결망과 은퇴경험이 중고령자의 건강과 어떠한 관계가 있는지 밝히고자 했다. 중고령자를 대상으로 고안된 최초의 전국 데이터인 한국 고령화 패널 연구(Korea Longitudinal Study of Ageing) 데이터를 이용하여, 주관적 건강상태와 가족(배우자, 부모, 자녀), 친구, 자원 단체 활동의 세 가지 범주로 구성화한 사회적 연결망 사이의 관계를 분석했다. 서열 로짓 회귀분석(ordinal logit regression) 결과, 부모와의 동거 여부를 제외한 대부분의 사회적 연결망 변수(배우자 및 자녀와의 동거 여부, 친구 관계, 자원 단체의 가입 수)와 주관적 건강 간의 긍정적 상관관계를 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 건강에 대한 은퇴 사건의 효과를 알아보기 위해 은퇴자 집단과 비은퇴자 집단을 나누어 각각 서열 로짓 회귀분석을 실시했다. 두 집단 모두 친구와 단체 활동 같은 가족 외 사회적 연결망과 건강의 유의미한 상호관계에서는 차이가 없었다. 그러나 가족 내 연결망에서는 차이를 보였는데, 비은퇴자 집단은 자녀, 배우자 관계에서 건강과 긍정의 관계를 보였고, 부모와 동거여부는 연관이 없었던 반면, 은퇴자 집단은 자녀, 배우자 연결망의 효과는 사라지고 부모 동거 여부와 건강 사이는 유의미한 부정적 관계를 보였다. 사회적 연결망을 통한 간접적 영향 이외에도, 은퇴 이유와 은퇴에 대한 만족도 등 은퇴의 심리적, 정신적 측면에 관련된 변수들 역시 중고령자의 주관적 건강과 직접적인 관련을 가지는 것으로 나타났으며 이러한 은퇴의 직접적 속성을 통제한 후에도 사회적 연결망의 효과는 여전히 유의미한 것으로 드러났다.

영문 초록

In this study, we examine how social networks and retirement are related to health. Using data from KLoSA, the first nationwide dataset specializing in the elderly, we analyze the relationship between self-rated health and three categories of social network variables: family (spouse, parents, and children), friends, and associational activities. As a result of ordinal logit regression modeling, we find positive relationships between self-rated health and most of social network variables, except living with parents. To examine retirement effects on health, we conduct another ordinal logit regression analysis targeting on two groups - retirees and non-retirees. Interestingly, among retirees, there is a significantly negative relationship between health and living with parents whereas other effects of family networks such as children, spouse, disappear.In addition to indirect effects of retirement through social networks, a couple of variables related to psychological or mental aspects of retirement, such as reasons and satisfaction of retirement, are also strongly associated with self-rated health. For the Korean elderly, retirement turns out to be a significant determinant of health in both direct and indirect ways.
