영문 초록

This study is to find out what kinds of effects the foreign direct investment (FDI) makes on the competitiveness of the domestic manufacturing companies. For this study, the database for related information by industry and technical level has been constructed to analyze the FDI's effects on the competitiveness according to total manufacturing industries, each industry, region, industrial technical level and company size. First, it was found out that the FDI makes a positive impact on the increase in competitiveness of all domestic manufacturing industries. This can be inferred that the technical transfer and employee movement would help the industries in hosting country to get the advanced technologies from FDI, thus making the spillover effect. This also applies to the companies in the same industry. First, it was found out that the FDI makes a positive impact on the increase in competitiveness of all domestic manufacturing industries. This also applies to the companies in the same industry. Second, it was found that the productivity spillover effect does not take place in case of regional perspective. Therefore, the more consideration should be taken when the FDI is to be introduced for regional spillover effect. Third, in the industrial technical level, the spillover effect was found to be bigger when it comes to high class technology group such as electrical parts, computer, video & telecommunication devices in terms of total industries and same industry. It means that the higher the technical level is, the bigger the spillover effect is. Fourth, in terms of company size, FDI into the medium sized companies with the number of employees ranging from 50 to 300 showed more productivity related spillover effect than that into larger companies with 300 or more employees in terms of total industries or small industry. Therefore, it is required that the characteristics of medium-sized companies and the transfer of technology shall be considered to make up plans for introduction of FDI. It is also required that the policy should be directed in a way that the industrial and corporate characteristics and transfer of technology can be easily made rather than simple growth in FDI volume. Finally, more studies are required to find out the backward and forward spillover effect of FDI over total domestic industries in the future.
